Never used slides before but need to show some work using slides. Pretty clueless can anyone give me some advice?

Can I get slides made from standard negatives? Advice on how to photograph existing artwork to be turned into slides?

I also have some passport photos that I'd like made into slides can this be done?

    Simple.

Go to a camera shop. Buy slide film (anything that ends in 'chrome', except Fuji which tends to be called things like Provia or Velvia or Sensia).

    Load your camera. Take pictures.

Take it to a lab that processes slide film. Ask to have them mounted.

Slides from negative: you have to go to a lab that produces internegatives. It's more expensive, degrades image quality slightly (depending on method and film) and less places do it.

Print film is for prints; slide film is for slides.

Do they not teach this at Dun Laoghaire?

I go to DIT not Dun Laoghaire so I've no idea what they teach there :D

The work was not originally intended to be shown as slides. I've just got the chance to show some work in a slideshow at a gig.

    Thanks for the advice though.

Do you know anything about making slides from digital images? if it's doable that'd probably be the best bet for me as i'd like to use some digitally edited stuff.

Probably is but might be pricy. Ask Primary Colours or that place on Abbey St.

You can have slides made from digital images, but they are pretty pricey. I think I was quoted about $80-90 for 8 images. The lab I asked said they output onto 8x10 sheet film and you could put up to eight 35mm frames onto it, which they then cut down to size. You had to pay for the full sheet whether you needed eight copies or not. There was also a production fee, or something, for the transfer of the images. You could have eight copies of one image on the sheet, or eight different images. But, if you chose eight different images, a fee was charged for the handling of each individual image.
Best just to shoot onto slide film from scratch, if you can.

Scan your work into a computer and burn it on to a CD. Then bring the CD to a printers. I'm sure someone on these boards would know a good printer able to put jpegs on to slides. I could just be talking out my arse as per usual though!:D:confused:

If you're working from prints, you could just use a copy stand to take photographs of the work onto slide film.

Norma's suggestion is a good idea, ie. setup prints of the images in question in an evenly lit environment, and using your camera loaded with Slide film, take photos of these images (taking care not to crop the image), preferably 2-3 shots for each image to be safe, you can then choose which shots are best later

Then simply bring your slide film to the photo lab, and pick up yer mounted slides a couple of days later of the images in question.

Another possibility if you are working from Digital images, is to look into borrowing a digital projector which can be used for presenting the images at yer gig ? Digital projectors can be hard to come by tho...

    I got a quote from http://www.connscameras.com/
in Dublin, couple of month ago to make slides from digital.

it was 5€ per slide, but obviously could be less depending on quantity.

If you could beg, borrow or steal a data projector you would cut out the hassle of processing your digital images on slide film.
Hiring such a projector costs approx €160 per day incl. delivery and pick-up. (a rather inflated price!!)
Chances are someone you know can get their hands on one via College or work.
If you do borrow one, make sure to use the correct screen as anything else will reduce the quality of the projected image.
