Hopefully a Swiss win, but considering their team tonight I can see the best we can hope for is a draw.

15 minutes in and its 0-1 Switzerland!!!!

Only 75 minutes longer to hold out lads!

A Swiss win will give us a great chance of getting 2nd place. We would only need a draw in Switzerland to guarantee it.

A draw tonight would be ideal, if we were capable of beating Switzerland away.

Ireland really have been poor in playoffs in the past, besides Iran of course.

2-1 to Russia at the moment. The commentator keeps saying that a Swiss win is what Ireland are hoping for. I'm not! The best result is a draw because it means all we have to do is beat Switzerland to win the group. If we have to play a playoff it is more than likely going to be against a better team than Switzerland so we are better off with a draw.

I'm all for a draw, I don't see any team in 2nd place contention that I'd like to see Ireland pooled againts, except perhaps scotland.

3 -1 now to russia the preferred draw looks rather unlikely unfortunately.:(

4-1 now. Thats doubly bad news, as the Swizz will fight tooth and nail against Ireland to make sure they dont finnish worse than 2nd. Russia should dispatch Georgia.

I don't think the plastic hammer brigade will be going to Portugal
    next summer....

4 - 1 now. So what does this mean then, we have to beat the Swiss to come second in the group yeh?

On the bright side if Georgia beat Albania tonight (which they should, then they will be in with a chance of qualifying as well, so they will give Russia a tough game...

Alright thanks. That's gonna be tough but still doable. I don't know how the Swiss play at home but when they played in Lansdowne Road they wern't that good at all (we were just REALLY crap).

That Swiss player that got the red card, don't suppose there's any chance he was like the Roy Keane of Switzerland, and they'll be crap without him?

first off we have to win so this will be the situation if we do win. If Russia beat Georgia in the last match then they win the group. If Russia lose or draw we win the group. Georgia will win the group only if they beat albania and Russia and Ireland draw with Switzerland.

Seems to me there is absolutely nothing to worry about from the swiss.
The irish team are a lot better than people give them credit for too.

Let us not forget that the Swiss were missing a lot of players tonight. Still at least we know what we have to do and ya never know what can happen.

I would have no confidence in the Swiss defence at all. Henchoz looked poor tonight for several of the Russian goals. Add to this that Ireland will look like scoring against anyone so all is not lost yet. The only problem is that we will always concede as well.

dont underestimate the power of the georgians!! is it in moscow that game??

we have to beat the swiss, and if we dont, then we dont deserve to get anything. you dont get nothing for nothing

I'm not too put out by the happenings last night.

We now know at least what we have to do.

We go into that game with an "us or them" attitude.

I'd not be too worried about the Georgians laying down either.
Does anyone remember the uproar over Georgia's home game against Russia? Basically its a Derby match with the Georgians having more of a grudge.

We have to win, simple as that, but I'd be optimistic about the Georgians nipping a point against the Russians.
