    Simple question that interests me.

Do you think Dublin (or any Irish city/town) should have a legal hash cafe similar to the Amsterdam model?

I clicked yes, but you'd never go to work, you'd be in a 24 hour daze and you'd be gagging for some Monster Munch when ye left the place. Sounds cool to me. ;)

The possibility will be ruled out if the new smoking legislation is passed - unless they just sell hash cake there:p

The Amsterdamned have an entirely different personality to the filthy knackeraguans that smoke the stuff here. Bad enough to find the odd one smoking a J down the back of the last bus home but to have them "buzzing" around town all day and night, man, laughing their nasal smackhead laughs at all sorts of ****e would be enough to make me emigrate.

I think Dublin should have hash cafes but the smoking ban for pubs and public places should be applied to them, there's nothing worse than some filthy smoker breathing smoke all over the place when I'm trying to enjoy my moca-latae in a novelty setting. have those junkie pigs no manners? huh!

mercie you sould like you've been smoking already!!!

    yes
I have often dreamed of owning the first ever coffee shop in Dublin, alas, I think I'll be dead before it happens....

I voted for the "I don't care" bwecauseI honestly don't - wouldn't object to it if thats what people wanted. However, in Dublin - it would attract a lot of attention from the wrong element :/

Well spotted. Actually i dont care if theres any hash cafes at all. What intrigues me is that in a poll about agreeing with the new smoking legislation the overwhelming majority for FOR it.

Now, correct me if im wrong here, but there seems to be people confused, as most people would be in favour of a cafe/bar that allowed smoking.

    Whats the difference?

Your willing to allow it in a bar because its DRUGS? What is wrong with you people??

WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!!

No workers just vending machines that work on fingerprints (so that you don't get enough to supply half of Ireland :) ).

Why cant we do that in pubs?

I voted no because as much as I would like to see a nice place where we could all have a relaxing smoke in a friendly atmosphere I just cannot see it working in Ireland (especially Dublin)

I just don't think we as a nation have the mentality to deal with it.

A pity though, it would be nice....

    mmm...

    no.
anyone in govt. that knows what amsterdam is like now can see it would be a stupid idea and attract scum.

Voted no. I like a toke as much as the next man, but while I'm all on for legalising cannabis, I don't think "hash cafes" are a particularly good idea. Let people buy the stuff legally and smoke it in their own homes or at parties or whatever, fine - opening establishments where people can go to do so is another story, to my mind.

Well, I lived in A'dam for a year and I can tell you that the coffee shops don't attract Dutch people at all (except for take-outs). Some are haunted all day by Dutch-Indonesians, but most depend on tourists for their trade.
I worked in a bar in the red light district (night-shift) and most mornings would see American students scrambling to get ready for the long flight home. After rolling them a farewell spliff, I'd remind them casually of "Midnight Express" and 9/10 times, the paranoia would kick in and they'd leave all their illicit purchases with me before heading for the train :D

I think it would be an excellent source of revenue for the gov. to give out 50 licenses for Dublin on a trial basis. As for the no-smoking ban, isn't that only tobacco?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

Definatly not, thats just asking for trouble.

Well Amsterdam (was there about two months ago) is a bit of a dump and the cafes seemed mostly crowded out with tourists. Here, alas, it would be the domain of the skangers. Still it might make them less prone to smashing bottles over people's heads.....

Incidently I'd be for the smoking ban but not against these cafes. The reasoning is pretty simple. Hash cafes primary purposes would be for smoking weed. So you go in there, you're going in to smoke. Whereas pubs primary market is in alcohol. You go in there to have a drink, and not to smoke. Smoking is only a supplement, not the actual main retail item....

What about the people who work there? Dont they deserve to be protected from the second hand smoke?

Wouldnt it be great to be payed to get high?

Voted no, I'm all for legalised hash, but not this way. We don't need drug tourism, we have enough puke on the streets. I would like to see hash legal, taxed and confined to the home.

This doesnt seem to be about grass though, does it. Well, as I've already said to Dustaz...

[14:06:43] [@Cian^] your analogy is facetious
[14:08:22] [@Cian^] grass is not even approaching the levels of carcinogens
[14:08:36] [@Cian^] that you find in cigarrettes
    [14:08:56] [@Cian^] and as mentioned
    [14:09:10] [@Cian^] a cafe's primary purpose is smoking
    [14:09:15] [@Cian^] a pubs is not
[14:09:51] [@Cian^] so would you apply for a job as a bee farmer if you were allergic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

[14:16] <Dusty|Worky> Actually most of those cafes serve beer
    [14:16] <Dusty|Worky> so theyre bars
[14:16] <Dusty|Worky> also, the primary purpose is irrelevant, smoking is supposed to be illegal in the workplace
[14:17] <Dusty|Worky> if the legislation went though then those people could sue the government

"And they abuse kids I heard."

Thats a bit of a HIGH statement now in fairness.

Smoking tobacco in the work place will be illegal.

Grass is a different story. Though it would mean cramming your joints to the brim with no tobacco which should make for lots of really ****ed up people stumbling around the country.

And most of the cafes I visited in Amsterdam did not serve beer. Several near the centre did, most of them were pubs with a cafe section.

Most of the smaller, and far nicer, places only sold tea, coffee, hot chocolate and soft drinks.

Just a quick question for the people that are talking down Amsterdam.

How many of you have walked around in the city, not just in/around Red Light district?

I lived in Holland for 1.5 years and I think it's a lovely place, you just need to stay out of the the most tourist dense places like any place in the world.

And you have coffee shops in a lot of cities in Holland, take Leiden for example, very relaxed and nice city of approx 100k citizens.

Back to the poll, I voted yes for the following reason.

It will prevent people that like their smoke. Not to get in contact with scum dealers who tries to sell you hard drugs (first test for free)

Where did you get the word Hash Cafe from? They are selling both Weed and Hashish

Knowing Dublin, in addition to taxes- I'll stick to combing through the carpet for the dust I dropped two weeks ago.

(Plus we have to think of the poor people breathing 2nd hand smoke- for shame for shame!)

i tink that hash cafe's should be available for those who want it but then some will bring up the need for places for injecting heroine. why Dublin only as the poll suggests i don't know

then again i haven't used an illegal substance for near a year but if people want to enjoy a joint legally i wont be stopping them
