when we play him and keane together we've a very small strike force, they both play kind of deep as well, we need a fox in the box

Without a doubt, he will definitely play against the Swiss. He is 26 years old and scored his first goal tonight for Ireland since he was 21. A 21 year old with 8 international is very rare for an Irish player but it all went downhill from there. He just hadn't got the confidence, as would be expected by a player who hasn't scored for his country for over 4 years.

He has now regained that confidence which is all so common for him at club level and we all know what a bit of confidence can do after seen how well Kilbane is playing lately.

In my opinion he is the only striker, excluding Robbie Keane, that can play at international level. Doherty is absolutely sh*t. He scored a few goals but that really doesn't make him a striker. after all, who scored the winner for us tonight.

Morrison is OK but not up for the international stage. He just can't keep his balance and like Doherty is diabolical off the ball. Nearly every time the ball is passed to either Morrison or Doherty they are getting rode up the ar$e by a defender.

After seeing Morrison's below average performance against Russia Kerr knew that he had to pair Keane up with someone else and that was going to be Doherty or Connolly. And after Doherty played poor yet again I think that may well be his last chance to impress as a striker.

Brian Kerr is not Mick McCarthy, he knows whats best for the team and doen't pick a player because they may have a good relationship.

    Bring on the Swiss!!!

He last scored two years ago (when he was 24). Not a good day for you getting your facts straight.

Was at the match, connolly had an excellent game, but I always thought he was under-rated and wrongly maligned anyway.

He has very good distribution, a decent first touch, holds the ball well (very well considering his size) and his link-up play is the best in the squad.

That said, I don't think he is the best partner for KEane. I think Morrison has more attributes that compliment Keane. Connolly is a very good option though.

Your absolutely right. These facts didn't come from me they came from Sky Sports today. If someone could please clarify this. The commentator said that he hadn't scored for Ireland in 4 and a half years!

BTW one goal in 4 years wouldn't exactly give you a confindene boost though, would it?

In - he's in form. Compared to everyone else.

His last goal before tonight was the 3rd goal in the 4 nil win over Cyprus in WC qualifier Oct '01.

Previous to that it was in a Friendly againts Paraguay in 99.

He would be my third choice behind the pairing of Keane and Morrison, however with Keane injured he should definately start against the Swiss. Damien Duff isn't a striker and Gary Doherty is barely a footballer, so Connolly should be ahead of them in the pecking order up front.

CONNOLLY and KEANO up front for me! Every time he (connolly) plays he always looks like he might nick a goal even if not doing much else.
Id also like to see the honey-monster back in central defence with cap'n kenny out.

If Keane is out i think connolly should play. If keane is in iimo they are two alike to be accomodated in the same team.

well id rather see connolly play before doherty!! doherty needs to learn the offside rule before he ever plays football again!! how many times was he offside - and he has two left feet! i have two left feet and i know i cant play soccer - so i dont play soccer but doherty when he got passed alpay didnt know what to do and his two feet went like jelly!! he could have easy squared it to duff or connolly!!

wouldn't mind duffer having two left feet...

Keane is definitely going to be playing unless he gets another injury (touch wood). He's out nearly a month now and there's another month until the swiss game. He was supposed to play for the reserves against Arsenal on Monday but didn't so he is nearly fit.

I like Connolly but havin 2 small strikers up front isnt great so id have Morrison and keane and connolly on the bench!

Definety Morrison and Keane up front, Connolly's only good performance in how long is not good enough to justify selection,.

And i don't remember Morrison having a good performance for Ireland. All Connolly needed was that goal to boost his confidence and he will show what he can do. Connolly is not far off Keane in goals scored so let them fight for it!;) ;);)

    doherty is a shambles
against turkey, i sat and watched him in an offside position, watching, watching, watching, waiting for the whistle to go for offside, sure enough the ball goes through, whistle sounds
if i can sit and stare at him for that length of time in an offside position, clearly he has no clue what hes doin, he had loads and loads of time to get onside, but made no attempt at all

connolly scored a good goal that i didn't expect him to, looks much more useful than doherty
