Pay for information?

    Hello folks.

I have something to share here which I find quite strange.

I've called eircom to find out if I can get broadband, the answer was that i have to have a phone line to get that information. Now, I gave them my full address, and told them that the line was already there and ready to be activated.

The answer was no, we need a number. So the end of the story would be that I will have to opena phone line to get to know if I can get broadband or not. (Have a telephone number)

Now the only reason I would even think of getting a phone line would be to get broadband. So in the end, if I can't get broadband at this place I will have to pay them to open a line I don't need to get an answer to my question.

I find this pretty crappy and just wanted to share this with you people.

Try one of the other options, if you don't need the line. irishwisp and IBB both provide phone-lineless products, assuming you live in Dublin. If you don't, then I think it's get the phone line or get cable.

Where do you live? The best we can do here really is work out what exchange you are most likey to get connected to, and then tell you if that exchange is DSL enabled.

The reason Eircom can't just say 'Sure you can get broadband!' is because DSL depends on the quality of the copper in your line. Taking into account the high number of line failures, it's far from a given that you can get DSL just because you are connected to a DSL enabled exchange.

Like it or not, you will have to get a phone line installed to find out if it is possible to get ADSL in your home.

I will be living right next to West pub/disco.
About 50 meters from the shopping center in Blanchardstown.

As you said, "like it or not, you will have to have a phone number". Well, I don't like it, that's why I posted this in the first place.

Ah you are very close to Ballycoolin where Irish Broadband have set up and are doing LOS tests now.. Give them a call
512/128 with no cap for €30/month

Yeah, you're right next door to the exchange so chances are you would be able to get it.

Also, don't forget that if you go for DSL with Eir***, Esat or UTVIP, you'll have to pay €24.99 for a phone line plus €22.50 per month on top of the monthly rate you're gonna pay for the broadband service.

Repli, are they doing customer LOS or just testing their system?

    It is what it's.

Have a look at these 2 threads particularly the last 2 pages of them

Ballycoolin (D15) is up and ready for LOS testing. It does not have backhaul yet - but is ready for testing.

The line is tested by sending an electrical signal down it, which returns the CAP - A as a proxy for line length/quality. This can't be done without an end to end connection - so you do need a line, and a number!

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be smart, that's just the way it is :( -- Although like someone pointed out there, you do have to also incorporate the costs of line installation and then line rental thereafter. If you are a student it really isn't worth it. Normally I would avoid recommending Irish Broadband, but in this case it is by far your cheapest option.

    No worries :)

It's just that coming from a land like Norway myself, moving here is like going back to the bronze age when thinking of technoly.

Except from that I love it though. Thanks for the tips everybody!

Try getting a neighbour or two to have her/his line tested. Its no guarantee, but it would give you the confidence to proceed with installing a line.
