I have a iol bb connection. When I first got it a month ago I was able to ping clarity.jolt.co.uk and www.boards.ie. Recently i dowloaded an on-line game Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory. I can play this game on-line recieving pings between 50-60 during the day and 90-100 during the night. Also the internet speed is constantly around 457.9 Kbps d/l 56.1 K bytes/sec.For some reason i cannot test my ping through the command prompt window anymore. I have tried it regulary over the past week and always recieved request timed out 100% packet loss. I don't know alot about computers and the internet but it seems odd to me I cannot test my ping. I have also tried to ping other servers but with no luck. I wondered could anybody shed some light on the problem???

I noticed some ISPs doing this, blocking some sorts of traffic. ie. Eircom blocked smtp and ping packages beyond their first router on their DSL packages. It lasted for about 2 weeks. Now I've seen a mate of mine cannot send ping packages on IOL BB so maybe IOL are taking a similar approach, unlike eircom I don't know if this is temporary or permanent  Hope that shed some light..

I had a prob like that today.
What was causing it was Zone alarm (a firewall), are u running that?
Even though i wasnt running zone alarm at the time, it was still being run in the background. When i load it up, it would ask me if i wanted to allow "ping" to connect to the net. While it wasnt loaded, it couldnt ask me, and would just block it.

Of course you problem could be something completly different......................

well try setting "internet" and "network secutity" settings to low, see if it works then.

It's nothing to do with the firewall - I've none installed and can't ping anywhere from dos either..

So can anyone offer an explanation?...i mean, i'm not the only one here am i?

Even guys with no firewall can't ping...have Esat stopped pinging?, is this due to the various internet bugs?
Have they closed ports or their servers and stuff?

I mean, how are people expected to play games online if they can't ping?....when i was talking to the guy today on Esat i said to him surely you don't expect people on the DSL service not to play online games and just use it to surf the net?

No reply...all he would say is that Esat will not support anything in regards online gaming or pings, i took this to mean that it is no longer possible to play games.

He mentioned something about the ping looking for an analogue signal or some crap like that, that DSL is digital.

Someone technically savvy please try and explain this, i think i am gonna have to kick up a storm about this and make some more noises.

OK...explain to me then why you can no longer ping with Esat?
Please offer your words of wisdom to the less fortunate among us.

ye more than likely is...so they blocked it off so its harder for virus's to infect pc's. Sounds good to me.

Think it's more likely so as to stop route cache flooding on the routers though...

Eh i'm pretty sure if they've stopped you pinging that it's to stop people pinging continuously in order to side step the idle disconnect iol bb has...

I doubt that's the reason somehow.
I'd say it's more msblaster related as has been mentioned here and on the other thread talking about the same thing.

    Almost definitely msblaster related.

msblaster routinely sent out floods of pings.

IOL probably therefore started blocking pings prevent a DDOS attack.

Thanks for everyone's help. As I said i think it's a great service iol have and I can game quite comfortably, it was just something i was curious about. I'd have to say i agree with the msblaster reasoning.
