    Oracle chief in costs warning

THE head of Oracle in Ireland said yesterday this country was unlikely to win new investment from the giant software company unless radical steps were taken to reduce the costs of doing business.

Newly-appointed Oracle managing director Nicky Sheridan criticised the cost of general insurance, health insurance, the poor state of the country's infrastructure and wage costs.

US software company Oracle employs 1,000 here, and last year spent €130m in the Irish economy. It is regarded as one of the most important multinational employers in the State.

The company was ranked number eight in a recent Business & Finance survey.

Mr Sheridan was responsible for setting up an international e-business centre for Oracle in Dublin which was won from stiff competitions from other locations before he took up his present position. Yesterday he said: "Ireland is still doing fine, but since other players entered the field, it needs to improve if it is to remain in the premier league of countries where Oracle is prepared to invest."

The country's physical infrastructure and its telecoms infrastructure came in for criticism. More effort is needed to be spent on developing electronic government, which would benefit all citizens.

Mr Sheridan said the upcoming Irish presidency of the EU was a missed opportunity for the Government to showcase e-government here to other EU heads of state.

The Oracle boss was speaking at the launch of a new software application for small and medium-sized companies, called Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition.

The company said the new integrated suite of business applications is tailored to SME requirements.
