    Hi
    Using windows xp home edition with sp1
    im just wondering what is safe to shut down/ and whats not safe to shut down on the process tab? Sometimes my pc can run quiet slow, and im just wondering if shutting down a few of these would help matters, currently running 1.8 gg, with 512 mb ram.
    thanks

    Would help to know what's running.. :D

    Anyhow, if they're services or programs that run on start-up you'll have to keep shutting them down every time you restart.

    As a start, have a look in Start->Programs->Startup and get rid of anything there that you don't want at start up.

    Start->Run. 'msconfig'

    click services tab. Click hide all MS services. Here would be some services you could take off. also go startup tab and untick what ever you think is safe. rememebr if anything goes wrong u can always just restart in safe mode and tick them back again.

    hope this helps

    If you really want to know whats running, go through the list one by one, taking each .exe in turn, go to google groups and run a search on it. This will provide further info on the process, what programme it belongs to, whether its an essential system process, etc.,.
