    Wexford probe linesman's antics

THE Wexford Referees' Administration Committee are to investigate an incident involving a linesman during a club game at Wexford Park last Sunday.

The linesman, James Flood of the Maudlintown club, became annoyed at the verbal abuse he was getting from spectators and jumped over the advertising hoardings surrounding the ground and invited a section of the boisterous crowd down to the pitch to settle their differences with him.

The incident happened during a stormy senior hurling championship clash between Glynn-Barntown, from just outside Wexford town, and Enniscorthy side Rapparees.

During the match, county star Adrian Fenlon had to receive a total of nine stitches after receiving two separate head injuries.

Rapparees supporters hurled abuse at Flood, claiming that he had witnessed the incidents which led to Fenlon's injuries, but had failed to inform the match referee Seanie O'Shea.

Commenting on the investigation, Wexford Referees' Committee secretary John Rossiter said: "In fairness to the linesman, I have heard from one quarter that a supporter in the crowd had threatened that he would ram a hurley down his neck.

"We will approach the issue with an open mind, and we won't be making any pre-judgements.

"But if the behaviour of the linesman was found to be untoward in any way, we will not shirk from suggesting to the County Board that serious action be taken. However, we will be approaching the issue in the overall context of proper behaviour on the part of supporters, players and match officials."

Flood is also an experienced referee, and has been handling Wexford club matches, including last year's county U-21 hurling final, for nine years.
