Its on tonight and tomorrow night on RTE for about 5 hours in total, does this gabfest of lovely girls derserve its pre-eminent
position in our summer season? Or should Tralee be nuked at about 8 pm?

Nuke the place. Oh I may well flick over for a few moments during the commercial breaks in Hunt for Red October on UKGold tonight at 9 in the hope of spotting some hottie but I've better things to be doing (like hair washing, making little sculptures out of butter or armpit massaging)

I don't begrudge tralee the tourism blip they obviously need but the show was a throwback even when it started.

They have yer man Ryan Tubridy off 2fm presenting it this year instead of Marty "studmuffin" Whelan. Wonder if he's any good.

We'll find out in 13 minutes.

I hope he pulls the piss. There is the chance he'll die on his orse....

There's no way to tell if they have lovely bottoms in those f*cking dresses. Tralee would be better off as a nuclear wasteland. I hate these beauty show things with a passion.

Although, that said, Miss Ireland was in my class last year in college... Very nice, sound person. :)

RTÉ1 seems to have been nuked off the local transmitter tonight and Sky is being used for cricket. what a shame. TV3 havew a good lineup tonight though :)

What the Rose of Tralee needs is a real life Kirsty Alley outta Drop Dead Gorgeous.

I really don't know what is worse - Eurovision or the RoT. I will do anything and everything to avoid both. Though I did have a peek at Eurocrap when I heard that England had nil points :D

Heheh, I know nothing about films, but inadvertently caught this movie on TV a few months ago - absolutely top class stuff. If that sort of thing was going on, the RoT might be worth watching.

Since that sort of thing isn't going on, Nuke the damned thing.

does RoT have a swimsuit competition?
No what it really needs is a wet T-shirt competition. As Jack would say: MORE WATER

There's an old lady who lives next door, and she's slightly deaf, with the result that when she's watching TV you can hear it all through the walls- the theme tunes to the soaps, the late late show, the camp guy who does the continuity announcements on UTV etc. etc. Right now you can hear the harp playing from the RoT. Out of a spirit of tolerance, doesn't the RoT keep lots of old people around Ireland happy for a few days going "Aah isn't she lovely....God doesn't she look great in that dress....Oh, if only I was younger, I wouldn't mind a go of that...."

And she let's you know that? How progressive for an old lady :D

It is sooo sad. All the contestants have to pretend (at least, I *hope* they're pretending) to be lovely, innocent nice "girls" in whose mouths butter wouldn't melt. No single mothrs allowed - very sad.

Was reading in the Indo that they banned one girl a few years ago after it was discovered she was an unmarried mother. Great to see such progressive attitudes.
Re the dude who was in school with the Miss Ireland one-they had a picture of her in the paper a while back at some fashion do in UCD with basically her baps out with only the nipples obscured by something. I wonder what the unmarried mother hating people of Tralee would have made of her:D
I only saw a bit of it this year, but any other year i watched it there was always a slightly insane looking one with a bad hair do that really made an arse of themselves. Any like that this year?
That would have been a good idea though to have Dermot Morgan present it.

    "They all have lovely bottoms"

Saw the Galway Rose there earlier

Bit of a minx, maybe a bit green, but very do-able

I think it should be an outdoor contest on a breezy evening so I could at least see their nipples before I nuke the mainly bunch of foreigners pretending that there parents were once Irish.

No offence to the lovely Irish girls who entered.

    :D

I think it's a bit of harmless craic to be honest. Yes it's utterly cringeworthy but again it's a bit of a tradition now and I'd like to see it keep on going.

It could be worse, we could have a tradition of an annual bull-baiting competition... yeah actually, if Derek Davis was presenting the Rose of Tralee we could...

    Thats a bloody disgrace.

I don't get it anyway, the innocent girls thing wears thin when you hit the mid-twenties....

Ah what harm is it, a bit of Irish culture, it's only of the only things we have left.

What I think would help is if we combined tje RoT with the fleadh.
Think about it free music and lots of pretty, drunken lasses!

The Rose of Tralee isn't a beauty contest - it's a personality contest - as can be seen from some the mingers who have won it in previous years.

Next thing you'll be wanting married women to be allowed to enter. Damn your political correctness filth.

At least they don't have to be virgins anymore....

    UP THE KINGDOM!!!

I would just like to say that I love the phrase Cultural Armageddon (good man Mike65 :D) and that I hate the ****ing Rose of Tralee (though the festival isn't bad).

But from what I see, the majority have all the personality of a week old corpse.

There was free music on during the festival, and lots and lots of drinking on the street. Unfortunately the roses are escorted around 24/7 so you wouldn't be able to get near any of them even if you wanted to.

I enjoyed the whole thing, its all a load of s***e but its a good excuse to get hammered :)

and please don't nuke tralee - its my hometown!

Nothing underhand about it, it's just that my own humble opinion is that the view that the RoT is "a bit of Irish culture" is a little off target.

I would have thought that we have plenty to offer when it comes to culture without having to scrape the bottom of the barrel and lump the RoT into our list of cultural events.
