    is this essential to windows boot? i'm running Xp pro SP1

    if it's not essential how do i turn it off?

    I assume you're having problems playing DVDs, Cr3m0? (it's the usual reason behind this being a problem (or a soundcard getting unhappy))

    That file is far from being essential - wolfman's link makes that clear.

    (really annoying, took me a week to figure it out when Office XP first came out (MS were pretty darn slow with the solution as well))
