Modem Arrived and Connects but

... is my line activated? I dunno is the answer I have.

It connects and goes green (it's the one that Esat provide-ZyXEL P630) and the light on the modem is solid green also.

But the transmit/receive speeds are always 0 and when I try the "nice" link IOL put on my desktop to log onto IOLBB it says "No response" or something like that. I take it that it's supposed to dial "*".

Is this the usual inactive line scenario?

Actually the exact thing it says is "There was no answer."

Does that sound like the normal inactive line?

Yep it sounds like your line hasn't been activated yet. Your exchange is obviously DSL enabled due to the solid green light indicating that your modem "sync's up". My line was like this and I was getting a similar warning message until eircom finally activated my line.

Just keep trying to connect a few times a day until you connect - then you'll know your line's been activated.

Well Esat say my account is set up since Thursday and that everything is AOK. But I get this damned rubbish no connection etc. :-/

Does anyone know if it could be my phone wire?? I have a really old phone line into the house and have had to wire a new plug in box cause it used to be directly wired in-no rj11 connectors.

That's what's worrying me but then again I get the green light.

    Hahaha.... Lenny: nope.

Downs and Ups? As in rates? I got nice 50s to 70s. 70s only the usual start spike tho.

Tribble: check & replied. Hope it helps! By the way it didn't work for me AGAIN this morning. I think it's a case of persistence. I had "hibernated" my machine and it wasn't working so I gave it a full reboot and all worked grand. I completely uninstalled McAfee Firewall too cause it seemed to be cutting my connection and it wasn't until it crashed did I get my first connection!!

ZoneAlarm is actually much better anyway.

I get the green icon for my modem too, and likewise I am unable to connect. I always attributed this to my monitored alarm. is it possible that everything is alright and I just need to try several times?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

I'd say keep trying, if you've not got it to work yet.

I don't think the Alarm would keep you from connecting. It'd just either disconnect you or not work cause of the DSL.

uninstall ZoneAlarm this instant! it is a VERY dodgy piece of software, and has been known to corrupt downloads.

Go to www.kerio.com and download Kerio Personal Firewall. Its very easy to use + completely free. It comes highly recommended.

I've been using ZoneAlarm for 3 years without a single problem, nor has anyone I know who uses it had any problems.

I wholeheartedly endorse this product and/or service.

By who? ZA is by far the best software firewall I've used. TBH I've never even heard of the one you mention. If its so good I would have thought it might have made it into a review or a cover cd/dvd on a PC mag.

this may be an older version than the current, but here's a few links about ZA.

As for Kerio, i got that on a PC Live cd ( or some other such free cd on PC magazine).

EDIT: i'd also like to add that i had terible trouble with ZA when i had it installed. In had severe difficulties with the Direct Connect app, and corrupted its downloads. The tech support never responded to e-mails about this.

Used to use ZoneAlarm then one day it started to use 90% of my cpu power, uninstalled it and all was dandy.
After a format i thought id give it another go, was working well then one day 90% cpu again, i thought feck this and never installed it again.

When it was workin it was brilliant tho.

That's one review out of 135. It gets an overall rating of 4/5. I did notice one thing in that review, "On Windows ME, ZoneAlarm ran perfectly well for a number of weeks. Then, it began to crash daily." There's the problem right there buddy, you're using Windows ME!!! :)

Kerio is also an excellent firewall, I know a lot of ppl who swear by it, but I'll be sticking with ZA for the foreseeable future.

Well I've used ZA a fair bit in the past and I've never had a spot of bother with it.

Like Pink said.. If you're using Windows ME you've got a problem, a BIG problem.

I will admit to having it installed on one of my computers but I don't actually use it seriously anymore. I had it on my laptop, it came preinstalled, and it was the worst version of windows I've ever used and I've tried them all... from Windows 2 onwards!
