    Hi,

Can anyone recommend a satellite engineer who works in Dublin (North County)? I've been on to Sky, but the person they were supposed to send never bothered turning up today, and they can ask my ar*e of they think they're getting any money off me now. Nearly certain its a dish problem, hoping its just out of alignment.

Phone numbers would be great, if not a name will do, I'll find the rest myself.

    Thanks.

Try sending a PM to Tony (who is a regular on this forum), I'm sure he'll be very helpful.

Thanks for the plug but I can only get guys in North Dublin to do installs, they dont want to do service calls for some reason. May I ask is it not possible to get the orignal installer back?

I got it done through Sky about 2 and a half years ago, I can't remember who did it...

The dish was out of alignment last year and Sky out ,e through to another crowd. Seemed decent, gave me his mobile number to avoid having to go through Sky again. Mobile lost three months later, all numbers gone...

As you can see, memories not the greatest!

Not to worry, I'll try a few phone calls. Can you give me an idea of a fair call out charge?

    therecklessone,

IMHO this is clearly a Sky customer services problem. If you are paying a sub to Sky it is up to them to put matters right if you are not receiving a proper satisfactory reception of all channels on the package that you are paying for!.

I find it strange that you are looking for a private engineer, when Sky has a contract with you, and they are the "Service provider" under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Acts.

Give Sky customer services a ring and tell them that if they do not sort out your problem, pronto - and offer you some type of compensation for the trouble you have endured. Then you will have no alternative but to consider taking them before the small claims court.

This threat can work wonders with major organisations who are afraid of negative publicity.

    I'd love to. But...

The warranties up, and I own the set-top box and dish now, right? So I pay for maintainence. I did call them them, and they arranged for a service call yesterday. Supposed to get a call early morning (i.e. about 8.30) to advise me of a time for call. I got up (difficult, believe me) then, and eventually rang them at 4pm to find out what was happening. Eventuallt told they'd called the service centre in Dublin, and they were trying to get the engineer on his mobile. I was to expect a call in half an hour at the latest...

 I called them again at 6pm, told they couldn't get an answer from the service centre, but that the engineer might still be out doing his work sheet. I told them not to bother aranging me another apointment, I don't reward lazy and incompetent service. No service engineer arrived.

What Sky and their contracted service staff failed to realise is that we (customers) do not exist for them to make money, they exist because we require a service from them. Bast*rds.

Look in the yellow pages under television aerials, there should be plenty of independent installers in North Dublin. The only people in the area I have had any dealings with are Electroplus who have a shop in Santry, they always seemed competent but possibly a bit pricey. I don't know if they do service calls though. Don't pay too much for a re-alignment though it is a very simple job, unless the dish is in a very hard to reach place.

    Will do.

The problem is that the siganl strength and signal quality both read o (zero). Sky told me its either an alignment problem, or the lnb.

Its been re-aligned before, things get windy out my way. Think I payed £65, pre-YoYo days.

    therecklessone,

Listen, I am well aware that you now own the Sky digibox and the Sat dish!. However, this simply will not let a company who supplied you with the equipment in the first place, and whom continues I assume to receive a direct debit sub from your bank account on a monthly basis for the supply to you of a "Viewable" package of programmes.

I personally at this stage would write a letter of complaint to the Manager of Sky customer services, giving them seven [7] working days notice for them to put matters right, or they could lose you as a subscriber or end up in the small claims court!.. Believe me they would rather give you and install a complete new digibox and sat dish than lose you!, or end up in the small claims court. If you put it in writing also add that you want a credit of a few months free viewing to compensate for the inconvenience you have suffered never mind the costs accrued trying to get their problem resolved.

Remember, nothing ventured, nothng gained!. In this world.

If you are rich enough to pay a private engineer to probably rip you off pricewise, then carry on and throw away your opportunity of getting a completely New Sky set up.

Have you considered cancelling. Then signing up again with Sky to take advantage of their special offers etc. You could always get someone else in the household to sign a fresh sub in their name?.. think about it.

    P.

I think they installed, but not too sure. If they still have the Sky contract for the north county then it probably is them yeah. Sky customer service rep. dealt with the company, I never got their name/number. Just as well, or I wouldn't have been responsible for what I said to them.

Its not that I'm rich mate, its just that I don't think doing what you suggest is gonna get me anywhere. Do you know anyone who's ever done this? Facts are facts. If Sky have covered their ars*es on this one (and I imagine they have), then there's no point jumping up and down and screaming blue murder at them, is there?

Thats not to say I won't be getting in touch with their complaints department (got the address yesterday when I was bitching at the customer service rep.), and I will be looking for compensation for their failure to turn up yesterday. As I said to the rep., I hold them responsible for their failure to turn up. They contracted the buggers.

However, Prem season starts back on Saturday, and Champions League would be nice as well (at least not with that fathead Welch on TV3). Needs must and all that.

If Sky were NOT determined to keep you as a subscriber, they would have told you to bugger off, instead of trying to arrange an engineers visit. Have you seen the posts on this Thread on this forum entitled :-" Kiss and make up Promo" ?.. you might find what Sky have offered some people of interest.

Wow thats way over the odds, 45 euro would be a reasonable charge even with insurance increases.

What basis have you for making this remark, have you met every private engineer, I ask you to withdraw this baseless generalisation.

    Therecklessone,

If you think it's the dish alignment then just check it with other dishes on your street. Even if it's pointing in the general direction you should at least get non-zero siganl strength and signal quality. There could also be a cable connection problem if it wasn't water-proofed properly. Did the deterioration happen over time or in an instant (After a storm maybe)
I would be inclined to check these myself if possible before I call anyone out.

    Tony,

I got a bit carried away there. You are correct and I hereby totally withdraw what was an insensitive baseless generalisation that was sweeping and condemned innocent, honest engineers. A profession that I respect and have no doubt are in the main honourable.

How the hell I made such a stupid assertion in the first place is beyond me?..

Hope this mends the fences a little.

I'd a feeling that was the case. I was told this time it would be £65 sterling (she reckoned €80...yeah right!!! )

Got on to Richard, he'll be sorting it out.

Oh, Paddy, just thought of the following: my computer wasn't working last week due to a problem with the CD writer. Would you advise me to seek compensation from IOL for my unused subscription to Anytime? Yeah, they didn't provide me with the equipment (well, they did provide the dial-up software), but then Sky don't own the Digibox/Dish anymore, and the warranty is out. I wouldn't have a leg to stand on legally.

I have read the "kiss and make-up" thread. Interesting reading, but I magine cancelling then demanding re-connection the following day on those terms would be a bit too cheeky...;)

    Anyway, looks like t'is solved.

Sorry for trying to be helpful. However in your case I will not be offering any further "FREE" advice. As you obviously prefer to pay, like the majority of innocent punters in Ireland. Who help make the rich richer while making the poor poorer. You being a qualified legal eagle and all?.. This is my last post on your Thread. Glad to read that you think your problem is solved.

    Wish you luck, though.

Hi Richard, welcome along to the ICDG boards.

Just a side note on Advertising here on boards.ie and ICDG. Can I ask you to have a look at the rules, re commercial interaction. We have had bad experiences here of people plugging their wares, so its in your interest and ours, if you find opportunites like this one here again. Its generally not "the done thing" to put up your number in a post, I certainly wouldn't, and I have no services to offer anyone! :D There is the Private Messaging function (PM) available should you want to contact anyone offlist or vice versa.

    Hope you enjoy it here,

    DMC.
