RTE Showing the premiership?

I was told recently that due to an EU ruling that RTE/TV3 might be able to get the rights for the premiership, as the deal sky struck only applies to the UK.
Does anyone know any info about this?

According to the Sunday Times TV listings The Premiership is back on next Saturady at 7 pm! ;) Seriously though, chances of RTE or TV3 being able to afford the rights to live games are nearly zero so expect Sky to have the rights using an Irish opt out....

I was told that a deal had been done with an irish station to show one live premiership match at 3pm every saturday.

If true that would be great but I fear it would be on TV3 as
RTE have SPL coverage. TV3 are the worst for footie...

Sky better win the ireland rights. I'd rather watch cricket on sky than put up with the muppets on rté or tv3 waffling on about crap during a good match. It just dont get better than Gray and Tyler and those classy sky graphics and intros.

If Sky win they might opt for pay per view only for the Saturday games

 nothing wrong with Sky's cricket coverage. it is much better than Channel 4's coverage

    What's an 'Irish opt out'?

Decending OT, I think Channel 4's cricket coverage is fine, its the schedulers attitude to cricket thats the problem, as its not pulling in the viewers or advertisers.

And England are crap anyway. :D

Dont forget, Sky broadcasts to Ireland, so de facto, they are an Irish broadcaster, of course not as Irish as RTÉ.¹

¹ TV3 are not Irish, majority owned by Granada and CanWest, and their daily allowance for Irish programming is taken up by Ireland AM.

Its would be like seperate channel, say a 2nd version of Sky Sports 2, which shows all the normal stuff, but at 3pm on Saturday it "opts out" of the schedule, so people viewing Sky Sports 2 in Ireland watch the premiership game for the Irish audience, while Sky Sports 2 viewers in the UK have other programming.

The likelyhood is that this match, would be PPV, the handiest option for Sky. :(

The reason live games can't be shown in the UK is for fears of reduced attendances at lower division games. For this reason there can be no live games on a Saturday over there. So if Sky do bid for it they will have to create a channel only for Ireland - or else do some pay per view thing with each game.....

RTE's coverage would be better than TV3's alright - but that's not saying much either. Best thing to do is turn the sound off and listen to commentry from Radio 5 live or some other station with decent commentary.

Anyway I just hope one of our stations get it and not sky......

But they way that there was 4 live packages for the UK, and all went to Sky shows that Sky want to be dominant where the live coverage.

I just cant see RTÉ/TV3 getting it. I'd be the first to applaud if either do, fair play and all, but 98% certain that if anyone is going to get it, its Sky.

    +/- 2% surprise factor.

    Thanks DMC.

I'd prefer RTE to get the rights. Anyone else remember watching saturday football on Sports Stadium a few years ago? It was on a delayed feed I think.

I'd even prefer if RTE and TV3 combined their efforts and showed the games on alternate weeks or something....

Anyway would be better than Sky...

Well my understanding was that sky had bought the rights but were doing a deal with an Irish station to be allowed show the saturday game.

It said in today's Indo that the rights for the 3pm Saturday match hadn't been decided yet.

RTÉ - i could live with that, it would be available free
TV3 - it would upset me to watch it but it too would be free but not for everyone (not everyone in this country has TV3) plus they have Granada behind them
Sky - i already have Sky but if they made it PPV it would piss me off no end
Setanta - no one seems to be mentioning them, it is a possibility and would definately be PPV
TG4 - out of their budget
