Bluetooth - Dead or Alive?

    Hi All,

Does anyone know what the story is with Bluetooth? Why are mobile manafacturers not all embracing bluetooth? There are a couple of new phones out that are really sexy, but none have bluetooth. I was particularly pi**ed off when I found that the SL55 didn't have it.

I recently changed from an older siemens phone to a Nokia and ended up with a car kit (Siemens) that I can obviously no longer use. I decided not to get another one for the Nokia, simply because I didn't want to be throwning that out too. I decided to wait for a nice new bluetooth phone to come out and then I would get a bluetooth kit for the car. That way, every time I change me phone, I wouldnt need a new car kit.

However, since I had this brainwave(!!) a few months ago, there have been pretty much no new bluetooh phones released. All of the bluetooth phones currently on the market (that I have seen)are big/ugly!

This leads to my question! Is bluetooth a fad that is passing, or is it something that is here to stay. If its here to stay, then why are manafacturers not releasing phones that support the technology!

    Cheers,
    Jab

Bluetooth is VERY much alive. Like any paradigm shift it takes time to reach a critical mass, but then, once there, begins to take on a life of it's own.

Only since I got my Nokia 3650 and TDK bluetooth adaptor have I begun to realise what a huge nuisance cables are! It's so convenient downloading photos and videos to the PC from the phone and apps and documents from the PC to the phone without having to mess around with cables that I now find myself wishing for bluetooth everything.

Bluetooth is now starting to appear in every kind of a device you can imagine, including GPS receivers, MP3 players and digital cameras. It's taking it's time but it's definitely not dead!

Bluetooth is a damned fine thing and I won't buy a new phone now unless it has bluetooth capabilities. I also have bought an adaptor for my work pc so I can transfer information between it and my phone.

Its so much easier than ir

Thanks all for the replies. Im glad to hear that bluetooth is not dead, and long for the day when everything is enabled!

However, it looks like I will be waiting for a while before I purchase a new bluetooth phone!

Of all of the models out there, the only one that really appeals to me is the siemens S55. The rest are either big, ugly or both!!

I currently have a 8890, its nice and small and fits in my shirt pocket with ease!

The Nokia 6310 is huge by standards.
The Sony Ericsson T68i is a bit on the big side, but is also ugly (imho!!).
The siemens one is kinda funky and just about the right size. However, now that I have seen its big (little) brother, I want one that small but with bluetooth!

Again, thanks all for the info.

yeah, Id love an 8910, but with prices starting at €400 in the buy and scam, I think I could be waiting!!

I didnt think that the 6510 had bluetooth?...

Nokia for one are very hit & miss with Bluetooth, or it may be that they are so over-stretched to get new phones out the door that they can't give each phones all the features they should.

My main gripe with Nokia is that the new 6800, oh so nice in so many ways, doesn't have Bluetooth. Why not, Nokia?!

Heck, they sometimes even forget to shrink phones before they're forklifted out (7650 anyone, oh my back!:D )

As somebody has already said, the new Sony Ericsson t610 has pretty good bluetooth capabilities, and its a little more compact than the t68. Plus it looks nice, in my opinion.

Eventually, most phones will have bluetooth. But at the moment operators such as Vodafone and O2 would prefer that it never hits the streets, because it makes sharing pictures, ringtones and stuff like that among consumers easier. And I think the manufacturers are aware of that and therefore are not pushing bluetooth as much as they could. For example, O2 would prefer that if you want to send a picture or a ringtone from your phone to a friends', then you send it as an MMS. Which costs 50c. They don't want you sharing pictures and stuff for free using bluetooth (as long as your friends are within 10 metres!), which is possible on new phones like the t610 (Quickshare technology).

By the way, I saw a t610 in Buy & Sell for €500... Way too expensive. Get it off the internet.

very much alive and kicking here :)

    re, alive/dead, success/failure: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&postid=949350#post949350

as for operators not liking it in handsets... they might prefer some profiles over others - they should love the dial up networking porfile allowing the user connect their Laptop or PDA to use thier data services enabling them to burn though more GPRS packets or dial-up minutes than on the handset alone

MMS vs. transfer of Pics over bluetooth - sure in some situations where you want to share stored pics with friends it could have some impact on MMS - but MMS is really more about sending (in a more spontaneous sceneario) media messages to people who are more than 10 meters away. (quickshare is more of a sonyericsson marketing term than a 'technology' - it's really just a friendly way of saying file transfer via bluetooth)

it's taken longer then everyone expected, has been plagued initially by some pretty bad interoperability and configuration complexity, but it's improving as time goes on although there is some way to go for that seamless no hassle connectivity that has been a prominent item in most bluetooth presentation for the last few years...

as the technology has matured, the marketing hype that oversold / misrepresented it's capabilities has thankfully deminished, although you still find amazing claims being made, taking the latest Argos catalogue stating "The devices find one another and link without any user input needed". Granted pairing and conneting had gone from being a situation where praying, shouting and pulling of hair could all be involved ;) to a less frantic matter. The situations where all devices suddenly find eachother and sort themselves out for you... well not quite...
