Powerbook G4 modem woes!

Are there any other G4 pbook owners (maybe this extends to desktop users also) who are really damn p*ssed off with the modem or ppp daemon on your machine? I, and lots of people I know experience problems with it, namely I would say 2/3 of the time when you click the 'disconnect' button, osx will not disconnect! Instead it just scrolls 'disconnecting....' I left it like this for a few hours and still it didn't disconnect...I don't like having to reboot just to be able to reconnect to the internet on a machine that is able to have huge uptimes.

Also, clicking 'connect' never works first time. Always takes at least 3-4 clicks to actually initiate a connection.

This, and all the bloody beachball's i'm getting at times when I have only safari and mail open, are really ticking me off about this machine. I'm going to upgrade to a gig of ram in the next month or so...anyone think this might help the modem problem?

I never had this problem in the 6 months Ive owned this machine, although I rarely use it.. However, I can relate to the connecting problem.. usually takes me twice to click on connect.. And even when connected, the speed is only 33,6kbps, whereas on my dad's laptop and my main PC Id always get 49,2kbps..

Oh well, I have DSL now

    I repeat eth0_ 640mb is fine, and cheap :D

I get better connects on the powerbook modem than on my wintel laptop actually, the actually connection isn't the problem :)

I posted abuot this on the macosx community on livejournal, lots of other ppl are experiencing it, I have all the system updates and still it persists...amazing apple haven't fixed it! That, and their memory guzzling xterm! :D

Hopefully i'll be on cable in the next month or two and won't have to worry about the damn modem :)

I don't have problems with mine except the 2 day old disconnect every 5 feckin minutes from UTVip.

Anyway, I get the same thing when I go out of sleep - are you connecting when you unsleep? I wait until the clock changes to the correct time so know that my RAM or Rom or whatever has kicked in.

As for the not disconnecting thing - are you using the modem bit on the top menu bar by any chance? I found that that happened when I started using UTV (I think, I could have been dreaming that tho).

What do you mean by that? I don't use Safari, even Safari 2 - iCab doesn't give me any problems.

Not sure about the modem problems but the beachball problems are well known and can be reduced by disabling services in applications>utilities>directory access, that you don't need - worked for me !

The only services enabled on my macs are:

    Appletalk and SMB.

If you dont connect to windows networks then disable SMB.

I got this tip from apples support pages.

    Regards

    Tinky
