good news for some (well me) THe transmittor is apparently on or very near mounthjoy prison. First northside transmittor so the future looks good. Got this direct from the engineers btw, not the sales staff.

For people reading about how bad IBB is (you may have heard my bitching in other threads), think again. I got off the phone today after having a nice conversation with a good tech support guy. They were having some interference on their relaitvely new Tallaght tower, and have been replacing/upgrading equipment over the last few days, which is why the service there has been sucking lately.

They said that the upgrades should be completed by the end of today (monday) but so far it still sucks mightily, but i will be getting a call off them tomorrow regarding this. I'd advise waiting a week or three before jumping on board on any new towers, as there is always teething problems. but if ya don't mind the often sub-56k speeds while all probs are sorted out, feel free to jump right on.

Evenm though my connection has sucked for the last week i'm still more or less happy with my connection... but unless it clears up soon, i'm going to be asking for reimbursement on this month's bill...

I'd advise any other people getting sucky connections to ask/demand a discount due to sucky connection

Still the best show in town at the moment, and i dont see what tallaght tower has to do with mounthjopy. I went into this with my eyes open knowign the full facts, i know they trottle down your speed during peak times and all that gear, but thats to be expected.

How much is the throttle down if I say signed up for their 1mb package?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

which package is that? res or bus? a think its about half, and then you have contention. this all may have changed in the last year, but the guy i spoke to there went into allot of detail, they trottle you back up off peak and the like, theres afew thread on the ioffl forum about it

The second one there. If contention is so low though then why is there a need to throttle people back?

you can't really compare wireless contention to adsl contention, wireless quality goes to hell at adsl contetnion rates, don't know why, thats just experience. Trottling it back, i think its something to do about insuring that business users get what they pay for, and that their contention ratio doesnt fall below 4:1mthey may or may not do it, depending on the level of trafic.

Have heared Ballycoolin is a goer on the north side to so it would seem they have it together as regards rollout. Should put the wind up eircoms slack idea of a telecoms revolution!!!!!

The mast in Blanchardstown was meant to launch back in March...

Boston has been following IBB since it launched last year, I'm pretty sure he'll be bracing himself for any teething problems it may have.

The 'throttling' is not throttling. Basically you are gauranteed 1/8th of your connection. If on 512k, thats 64k, 1meg, 128k. With business its double that. Before 6pm, a further priority is placed on the Business customers that allows them to use up more bandwidth than would otherwise be available, this can have a detrimental impact on the res customers.

Right now, i am downloading at 124kb/sec on DC++ cumulatively from multiple sources. Downloading from a single source is a little more erratic but generally floats between 80kb - 100kb a second. During the day it can fall but not by too much.

The mast i'm on, 3-rock, has had it's problems. Originally, the packetloss was horrible, making game playing near impossible. Then they switched gear to 'frequency hopping' stuff, this eliminated the packetloss but added 5 - 10ms. Doesn't sound much but it's the difference between being able to say that you get pings lower than most english people to their own servers (18ms to jolt) and well not being able to say it. One things for sure though, I'd never go back to the laggy play caused by the technology used before.

Anyway, I'm glad that people on the north side will be able to get broadband from more readily available sources now. IBB may be far from perfect, but most of the time, it's better than the alternatives.

Ive been connected to the Guinness mast for about 6 weeks now (Im in Cabra) and I havent noticed any major diffrences during the day or night. It is a bit faster in the evenings but nothing to write home about.

So far Ive had no outages and I am very pleased. Im not too sure about the new product they are offering with a 20-1 contention im not switching but i definitely dont want any degrading of quality.

I have never played games online but maybe i might try it and see if it is any good

Just have to download a game first...lol

Overall im very happy Eircom can stick it up their Jacksy.

just got off phone 2 mins ago from IBB, and once again they have been quite helpful. When they ping the same gateway as me, they get 15ms pings, however i get 300ms pings. They promise to ring me back within the hour (and they kept theat promise before) with a hopeful solution. They are currently investigating. However my connection has been worth it, even at the speeds i'm currently getting i would easily download more than 3 gigs a month.

IBB guarentee a minimum of 64kbps access e.g. 512/8. Which equals to 8kb's down per second. And while i have gone below this, it has (so far) never lasted more than an hour or two. Given a choice to start over again... i would have cut down that damned tree that is partially blocking the line of sight to the IBB three rock mast and i would have connected there instead.

Exactly, this is what I mean by throttling, then don't do I as a policy, ( I.e. cutting res users speed for the craic of it) they just asign according to priority, which helps ilimiate some of the risk for business users who use the service.
