    I have a D-Link DSL-604+ router/internet gateway etc..... its a wireless thingie......

Can't for the life of me get the thing working. Broadband works fine through the supplied USB modem, but no job with the 604+.

I know most of the settings, Vpi=8, Vci=35, PPPoE LLc, Chap, etc.

Help please......... the bird is driving me nuts trying to use my computer for the internet. I just want to go up stairs with me laptop!

What exactly is the problem? Which ISP are you with? Have you tried their tech support?

I have a Netgear Wireless router that is similar to the D-Link - basically worked straight out of the box. I may be able to help if you can describe exactly where you are having your problem.

    I'm with IOL.

Basically I've entered all the settings:

    Vpi=8
    Vci=35
    Encapsulation=PPPoE LLC
    Login User Name=**********
    Login Password=*********
    Authentication=chap
    Connect On Demand=enabled
    Idle Time=0
    IP Control=Get Ip from ISP

and I'm getting the connection response:

    "PPPoE server not found"

I then changed my "NAT Function" to enabled in my "NAT Configuration" section. Left "DMZ State" to disabled.

This changed nothing, I'm still getting the "PPPoE server not found" response.

thanks a million for any help.

I *think* someone mentioned before that you need to set Authentication to auto, but it might of been a netsource thread, still noharm in checking.

Is the DSL sync light on? I'm afraid that's my only idea. You might try IOL's tech support - although it is possible that they will refuse to help with third party modems.

I'm presuming that you have removed the USB modem software and that you are getting the "PPPoE server not found" response in your browser when you click on something in the web management interface?

E.g. you aren't still trying to use the PPPoE software on your computer?

I havent removed the PPPoE s/w from the computer. Should it matter? The router is a seperate "machine" and it should connect to the ISP regardless of what is installed on the computer. would then access the internet through the router.

Yeah. I'm using the web based configuration tool on the router, and that is where I'm getting the response.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

No, you are right, the PPPoE software on your computer isn't the problem if you are getting that message from the router's web interface.

No more ideas I'm afraid, beyond trying IOL tech support.

i have one of those routers, you need to go to tools > lan , set the ip address of the router as 10.0.0.1, click apply, restart modem, restart router, restart pc and it should pick it up ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭SachaJ

could you run through that again.....

My router already has an IP Address of the standard 192.168.0.1. Do I need to change that?

Iol broadband service, last i looked was pppoa not pppoe, thats probably why the server wasn't found.

As far as I know, its deffo PPPoE.

Here's an image of my settings:

    Any more ideas people?????

    i'm no genius, nuff said!

...but should there be a full-stop before the @iolbb bit of your username?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Is the DSL sync light on the router lit?

I wouldn't expect that page to show a PPPoE server found unless you (a) change 'connect on demand' to enabled, and then try to go to a webpage; or (b) there must also be a page that you can go to in the interface where you can manually connect/disconnect - if you could find this page you could try connecting and see if you get a specific error?

IOL are reselling Eircom's product - it's all PPPoE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭SachaJ

Underneath the "PPPoe server not found" on the image below, are 3 buttons - Add | Connect | Disconnect.

Its after i click connect, it tries to connect for a minute or so, and then the "PPPoe server not found" message appears. So I suppose I am manually trying to connect.

There is no "DSL sync light " but there is an "ADSL" led which remains lit when I connect the line to it. Flashes for a few seconds, then remains lit, which suggests that the line connects.

In the configuration settings, there is a tab "ADSL Line Setting," and when I go in there it has a connection status message. When the line is connected the "Connection Status" says "Showtime". This suggests that everything is running ok. When I click re-connect, it goes through the motions, giving up "Handshake" messages etc.

There's no full stop between my username and the "@iolbb". Thats the end of a letter.

in the last post, it should say "image above," not "image below"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

That is what the ADSL led would mean - when is flashing it is training and when it is steady that means that the physical connection is OK.

You could try D-Link's tech support:

    +1800 552 730
    8.00am - 8.00pm Mon-Fri

take a look at pages 9-12 of this http://www.dlink.co.uk/data/dsl-300g.pdf. I cant assume your modem and router have the same ip but I know dlink and linksys modems use the same ip as the router uses.

In any case you should try to put them on a different range so theres no conflict.

    thats all i know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭SachaJ

Do you have a seperate modem and router?

    I have the DSL-604+ - a modem/router/internet agteway all in one box.

Going to have a look at the DSL-300 info now. That link doesn't work - going to try their ftp site.

    cheers

This could be a really dumb question, but here goes:

Is there any chance that the micro-filters supplied by EsatBT are only compatible with the supplied modem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

That would be highly unlikely. I've used my (Netsource supplied) microfilters on both the USB modem and router and they work fine on both. Mine are Excelsus - I think this is what everyone is getting from their ISPs.

Anyway, if you have the ADSL light constantly lit, the problem is not the microfilter. This indicates that the physical connection is OK.

You know you can plug the DSL straight into the phone socket - the microfilters are just for the analogue devices in your house (or if you want to put a phone on the same socket as the DSL modem).

Try changing the Autentication to Pap.

    tried that a few times.

I have the phone and DSL in the same socket.

It shouldn't make any difference in any case, if the DSL light is steady green that indicates that it's not a physical problem.

No they arn't (well the new Radsl serive might be, if its an unbundled line, then its pppoa.

SachaJ, the picture you posted is of your router of course its going to say pppoe, if its a pppoe router, doesn't mean the service is. I know for a fact iol have pppoa on the majority of their adsl services, weather that changed recently with the development of RADSL, i don't know, best to ring up esat and say i have such and such a service, am i pppoa or pppoe? It should really say on your modem (Orginal)

Btw the mircofilter thing is a non-runner, their a block standard frequency splitter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

AFAIK, all 'IOL' branded broadband is the Eircom resell.

The unbundled Esat broadband is sold under the EsatBT brand - see http://www.esatbt.com/ie/products/access/dsl/

O sorry, I hadn't noticed the distinction, must be the radsl service then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭SachaJ

I got a quick installation guide with my modem, and it has setup info for MAC users. Says to enter PPPoE as the encapsulation method

Maybe something in the following two images might help. Still getting the "PPPoE server not found."

once the line condition image says what it says above the "Jumpering" has been done by eircom and your connected physically to the DSLAM.

Ring Iol on this, looks like there may be some small issue causing the problem. The router will definately work with IOL BB.

On another note, just keep trying to connect. I remember having a similar problem with eircom a few months back. It gave the same error but eventually connected after a few attempts.

I agree with flamegrill, from the above your router appears to be working normally and the problem is most likely with the exchange, if it was the filters or anything else you wouldn't have that line status info, also in item name, did you fill in iolbb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭SachaJ

I'll keep trying. I did read on the router's user guide to try a few times, that it doesn't always connect at first. I tried it up to 5 times yesterday in a row, but no joy.

My Broadband modem is working fine, but this router is doing my nut in.

As far as I know the "Item Name" is just a tag for this setup.

ie. I can have multiple configurations setup, and each one has an item name. (I presume!!)

Notic it says pppoe llc, i don't know what the llc stands for. Something like this kept happening with me and my linksys router on eircoms service (think it was somelike like not shuting down right) if i recall correctly what i did each time was press the reset button, and put back in all my information again. Give it a try if you haven't already.

    From the horses mouth.......

"Thank you for contacting the technical support of D-Link.

Logical Link Control (LLC)layer is one of two sub layers of the Data-Link layer and is concerned with managing traffic (flow and error control) over the physical medium. The Logical Link Control layer identifies a line protocol.

Above explanation for LLC might be of little help for you but in order to help I need more info about your ISP. However, you might have missed to hit the apply button after you have changed the default settings which are set to PPPoA."

And that was the last I heard from them.......

One thing about these routers that has got on my wick is, they don't connect automagically. Its a pain in the balls to have to drive home from work to bloody make it connect if there is a power cut or something. Is there anyway to make it do as its told ?, short of putting a laptop on the lan 24/7 pinging the outside world and enabling connect on demand?

    Paul

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

MY linksys would conenct the minute it was powered on, i had auto reconnect if the connection dropped every 20 seconds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭flamegrill

These babies don't have an auto-connect feature, they do have connect on demand.

    routerconfig.gif

Thats my config page :/, this is a 504 btw not the 604 as is refered to in above posts.

Not a hope, I have a linksys 54g bb router plugged into it hehe, its sharing the web for the neighbours :P

I know you've probably looked at this already a hundred times, but your diagnostic and event log screenshots clearly show that the problem is with PPP authentication. Your username/password need to be EXACTLY the same as those you use when you connect successfully with the modem. Assuming they already are, see if you can get an IOL techie to monitor their end of your connection attempt.
