I have a small home network 1 XP and 1 98 and soon a new laptop. I have a broadband connection using ethernet. What i want to do is buy a **** computer to act as a firewall and gateway. I want to add bluettoth to it when i get a new laptop for internet sharing. What would be peoples' advice on setting this up? What firewall? gateway software? virus scanner?

Also i's like to set up a mail server with spam filtering on the gateway system any one suggest anything

For starters, scrap the bluetooth idea. It's useful for connecting your fridge or your watch to your computer or some gadgety thing like that, but it's far too slow for internet sharing. Go for Wi-fi

Get the latest version of FreeBSD for your gateway machine. It'll do all the firewall, mail server things that you want

You can get a 4 port q-tech modem/router/switch from Marx-Computers for €130 that'd sort you or you could spend a bit more for a wireless package.

    Well you won't need a broadband modem/router/switch if you're using a gateway.

I'd also go for a seperate switch and wireless access point, and not a combination device. Makes it easier to upgrade.
