Does anyone know whats the max number of fonts that XP Pro can handle?, will having a shedload of fonts on the system use up more resources than just having the standard ones installed with windows?...

Anyone looking for a few nice fonts can find a load of freebies on www.1001freefonts.com .. heh, guess what site I was on this evening...:D

More than 400 or 500 will probably see a performance hit. At least that used to be the rough rule, though processors are sooo fast these days:)

Chances are you don't want more than a few hundred anyway. Might be worth considering something like Adobe Type Manager if you really do need quite a few (handy for switching them in and out)
