Anyone know a decent club in or around the City centre or Phibsboro/glasnevin area?

Is there a start date for beginners classes , one of my biggest problems with starting these things is that you are thrown in the deep end with some punter who has been doing it a while making you feel like a dope. id rather start off with some other beginners. Im looking for something that incorporates short strikes and joint locks/throws. the type of stuff that would work on the street if needed. would Ju Jitsu be the one for me?

Ju jitsu is a good way to go. When I started I was the only beginner.

It isn't as bad as it seems. Just because you don't know what you are doing. It is also better to train with some-one more expierenced as the ycan tell whether you are putting the lock on correctly as they know how it should feel.

I don't know any clubs in your area.

Keep a look out in local news papers and sport centres and you might find something.

    Cheers,

Once you get to do a bit of sparring and learn to throw a good punch and to learn your distances, footwork and dodging punches etc. I don't know if Ju Jitsu caters for this. I know it's bloody brilliant for locks though. Bruce Lee incorporated some of those locks into his Jeet Kun Do which was designed around covering 3 distances of combat, long, middle and short distance.

A lot of these martial arts like Judo are close combat and that's all very well if you do end up close in on the streets and you haven't just been dazed by a smack in the nose. Always better not to get too close in the first place as you know. A guy I used to train with in Jeet Kun Do years ago does Ju Jitsu somewhere in Dublin now. I wouldn't see him often enough to ask him where though. He's a bouncer in a well known club in town and he swears by it. He's actually a big softy, doesn't like hitting people so he says this style suites him right down to the ground. I didn't discuss it with him but I get the feeling there isn't much middle distance striking involved.

Well my Kenpo Ju Jitsu Club does all of that.
The locks however are even better like you said. Anyway we got to find him a club so if you can try and get in contact with him to see where he trains.
