I'd like to set up a wireless lan with me and my mate but don't know what hardware to get or where to get it. Bought our houses are in line of sight of each other and so are the windows of the rooms that have the computers. We are at the most 400 metres from each other. The lan will beused for gaming and filesharing. We don't mind Peer to Peer since we don't have plans for adding anyone else to the lan. We are also looking for a cheap solution. Any help would be appreciated.

400 metres tends to be the limit for most Wireless NICS and Wireless Access Points. On that, I would be inclined to use 2 Wireless Access Points and configure them to run in bridging mode. Obviously, for this to work, they must support Bridging.

there's a great site called irishwan.org and you'd get some top notch advice in their forums, plenty of people there who have set up what you are looking to do

A more detailed solution to your problem..

You will require two Access Points, both capable of Bridging. I would purchase one that allows for an external antenae to be attached in case the built in antenae is not powerful enough for the distance required.

Obviously, you will require an AP in each house, connect one AP to a NIC in your PC, you will likely need a cross over cable for this. Configure both networks to be on the same IP range etc.. and then configure both APs (SSID, Frequency, WEP etc...) and make sure they are in bridging mode.

Overall its not that complicated to be honest.

You don't need an access point! Your equipment requirements are pretty low actually.

You will both need a Wireless card at the very least.

At 400 Metres you're going to need an antenna of some description. Have a look at vbnets.com. They sell a number of different types of antennae including some pretty small ones which, at 400 metres, is all you need. In fact, you can probably get everything you need from them. Mention IrishWAN and you get a discount. Actually, you should go and visit IrishWAN.Org and/or DublinWAN.Org and soak up some of the excellent information available there.

In order to connect the antenna to the WiFi card, you need to make sure that the card has a socket for an external antenna - Orinoco is one of the more popular cards and it has a socket. I have a couple of them and I find them excellent.

You'll also need a pigtail, which is a length of cable connecting the card to either the antenna or to a length of cable leading to the antenna.

Set the cards up to communicate peer-to-peer (Ad-Hoc) and set the same ESSID on the cards. That's it - you should be operational now.

    Hope this helps.

    Liam

Forgot about the external antenae on the NICs, sorry!

Lucky for you I read this about a week ago. It's exactly what you're looking for and they are in Kerry.

Agree with the wolfster. VBnets are very good, I bought my hardware from them when getting set up with DublinWAN.
Point to point gaming may be the plan at the moment but have a look at Irishwan. For a few € extra you could have cheap internet access (possibly) and many more ppl to game with @ sub 20ms pings. It does all depend on where you are of course.
Stick a message on the forum at Irishwan.org. You may be surprised at how helpful and keen they are.

If i were you id spend the money on 2 Buffalo 54mbs (802.11g) AP's put them in to a WDS bridge (pice of piss to do) and you could eve secure it with WPA encryption (as opposed to ****ty WEP)

    The AP's

each then u need to pig tails

    http://www.vbnets.com/products/page.php?id=56

2 lengths of coax to meet you needs

    http://www.vbnets.com/products/hardware.php?cat=cable

and 2 Antenas. These do the job nicely

    http://www.vbnets.com/products/page.php?id=7

You end up with a high speed secure link, and each AP has a 4 port switch built in :)

I know people with this setup who are extreamly happy with it...
