    Ello,

Decided to post this here, I know some of you's are bound to be in the know.

Bascially I have been wanting to take up the guitar for ages now, and finally decided to do something about it.... but know **** all about it really.

Since I love metallica, great solos etc and would love to be able to play their stuff but I am clueless to what guitar and amp to buy. My budget is about 1000 eurons, maybe more if needded for both the guitar and amp and are wondering what is the best one to get. I know ppl say start off with a basic bog standard crap guitar - but **** that, I want the best, so I'll get the best.

So can anyone recommend what guitar, amp and any accessories get (stings, pedals) that are the best for the type of music I want to play. Also some links to info on total newb stuff like tuning and basically learning to play would be really apriciated.

    Thanks

Ok If your serious about this, heres what I suggest

The Marshall MG100 DFX 479 Euro
Its a 100w Combo amp (preamp and speakers combined), and has some of your basic effects built in, and will last you ages.

Here's some reviews of the amp.

    And for your metalesque 'leccy
    The Jackson RX10D 466 Euro

Fucking class guitar for it's price, and will suit the sound perfectly. Floyd Rose Tremolo System though, might be a bit complicated to change strings.

Here's some reviews of the guitar.

Those DFX Marshall aint worth **** in my opinion (how much does that actully matter though..?)

The tone is just .. well ****.. someone prove me wrong ?

This is probably best suited to the Instruments board, but I left a redirect anyway, so you're getting the best of both boards. ;)

That's good stuff that Giblet is reconmending, but if I was you, I'd go for a 30 watt amp, just for practice.

Also, go to www.powertabs.net and download the powertab editor and then download as many lessons as possible. Then who knows? Some day you migh be as good as me! :D

Get a cheap eletric guitar, and a good amp, and when you get good, ye can spend yer cash. If ye go into a store and say u have an unlimited budget, they'll laugh at u, or give u their most expensive guitar.

EXPENSIVE DOES NOT always MEAN GOOD

nice one *******. Id personally recommend an ESP Guitar, they arent the most expensive around and they are built extrememly well, they are also what James hetfield and Queerboy use.
Marshall Amps are nice if they are decent but im slowly going off them, but a nice 50 watt would suit you perfect. If you have the cash Get a line6 Amp you may even pick up a nice spider. if you do then chances are you wont need to by any pedals.

Hey, ESP aren't exactly the cheapest or best guitars around, especially for a beginner. You might want to look at Ephiphone, Fender Stagemasters, Arias (personally I hate them), some low end Ibanezs. Maybe you're best bet is to find a mate or a mate of a mate who plays guitar and knows what they're talking about and drag them to the shop to try some and give you opinions on them. Don't forget to look out for really good deals and screw what the guitar looks like. If it sounds like you want it to, go with it.

    Epiphhone Gothic G-400 - €366

Epiphone LP Studio Gothic - €398

    Epiphone LPSTDEBONY - €455

    Jackson Rx10d Rhoads Bk - €466

    Peavey Predator Plus 7TR MCV - €259 (7 string)

    Yahama PACIFICA 120S-YNS - €198

    Roland Cube 30 - €255

    Hughes & Kettner WARP7 212 - €629

Also consider amps from Fender, H&K, Laney, Line 6, Marshall, Orange, Peavey, Roland, Vox and if you're really after Metallica tone and have stupid amounts of money, Mesa Boogie!!!

Personally, I'd say go for Laney.

But oh god, I wish I could afford a Mesa Boogie!

But oh god, I wish I could afford a Mesa Boogie!

Me too! But I'm looking at the Mode Four at the moment. Could be good!

Mode 4,is a damn rip off,and doesnt sound as good as any of the valve counterparts not by a long shot ..in my opinion.

Having to buy a specific cab for a head,is just bull****get a second hand tsl 100,nice second hand 4*12,****ing sorted..

Unless you know of any other cabs that'll support 350W, you do have to buy it. You can buy other one's but the speakers will eventually blow.

Just interested, but how long have you play tested the Mode Four for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Tom . he aint gonna be using a stack starting off, thats a good beginner amp there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭NeMiSiS

It supports only two types of cab the MF280 and the MF400,because they have some kind of 'special' bass response in the cabs, god only knows..but it all sounds very gimmicky to me. I dont understand how you cant see it being a waste of money?

"You can buy other one's but the speakers will eventually blow." - Thats great then isnt it ?

Its a hybrid solid state amp too,so it will never have the power of a true valve amp,or the tone. Its made to compete with the triple rectifier Mesa Boogies.

And I spent about a half hour to fourty five minutes trying it out,I was realy very interested. I then tried a JCM TSL 100,for 5 minutes which skull ****ed the mode 4 into oblivion,so that will be my new toy in about 6 weeks. I also tracked down a dewd selling a JCM 900 so its a toss up realy at the moment.

"Tom . he aint gonna be using a stack starting off, thats a good beginner amp there."

Id go with the VST range insted Paul, the DFX just seemed fiddly and corny to me..reasonable though..for a beginer maybe..or a girl..wheh wheh wheh *grin*

    Tom

because they have some kind of 'special' bass response in the cabs

No, it's because the head is giving out 350w of power to the cabs. That's why you need the MF cab's.

And a DSL is probably better than a TSL from what I've heard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭NeMiSiS

So why dont you get one insted of the Mode Four ?

    Tom

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

For one, the DSL is more expensive than the Mode 4. And I'll not be buying either for a long time. I just said I was looking at it.

    I too was expecting lesbians.

I learned on the cheapest possible electric guitar I could get and slowly worked my way up to Gibson Les Paul HOT SEX! My amp of choice was also the cheapest I could get.

Being a stingy Scotsman - I recommend The cheapest you can find.

    Now, where are those lesbians?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭padraigmyers

I agree, you sould buy the cheapest you can get, you can get all the
reccomendations in the world here but they may not suit you. Buy a cheap rig, play
with that for a year or two, then when you have some iea of the kinda tone you are
after go out and spend that EUR1000. You could spend that money now, and then
end up selling it all in 6 months for half the price because it dosn't suit you.

For example, take the guitar you choose, I personally would reccomend a nice
Ibanez or ESP if you were going to spend 500EUR, but someone else might
reccomend a Les Paul copy or Strat copy, now all 3 of these guitars feel completly
different, if your used of playing Jackson solist type fret-board (mostly used in
metal) you will probably not like the feel of a EUR3000 Les Paul. Just because a
guitar is expensive does not mean that it will suit you or the type of stuff you play.

So, go out, get a set-up for about EUR300-400 and learn the damm thing, then buy
a propper set-up when you know enough to choose for yourself. That money might
be better spent on effects pedals, lessons etc down the line.
