They did that offer last year, so it's very possible that they are doing it again. I can't remember the price back then, but it wasn't expensive

They sold an analogue box which is useless for the BBC service.

Desktop PC Boards discount code on https://www.satellite.ie/ is boards.ie

Im pretty sure that it was a digital box and it was around 50 - 60 Euro I think.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 441 ✭✭colin300

do you know if they are still selling them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 566 ✭✭✭byrnenj

There might be an Irish LIDL site, there seems to be a few in google for different countries. I tried LIDL.ie but all i got was an internal server error. So it might be there but Kaputt!

Look out for a leaflet through the door! I usually get one with all there latest offers.

Lidl offers are made available on Mondays and Thursdays. They have the leaflets in store or advertise in the local press eg. in galway, they advertise in the Galway Advertiser -showing all the latest offers.

I always like to look out for any tech related stuff...would be grateful if someone could post if theres anything relevant on offer for this thurs.:D

As Tony said, they were selling Analogue boxes, I know because I have one sitting at home......
I picked it up because it was €60 for the dish and the Analogue receiver........

    Same company.

When you get the leaflet in the door from Lidl you will see they have the same specials.

I seem to remember that the ad was misleading - it was a digital-compatible dish (i.e. the LNB was appropriate) but the receiver itself was analogue.

Same company? Eh, you're way off the mark there. Lidl first opened in 1973 in Germany and is owned by the Schwarz Group (they own a few big hair care product companies), while Aldi (albrecht Discount) opened around 40 years ago.

Nice analog recievers (I use one for test), average dish and decent Universal LNB.

The supplied coax cable is rubbish.

The analog box can be used to test a 4-way Disqec switch.

With an old Sky analog ADX+ in "plus" mode (poke pin in hole at side to operate switch) the Analog receiver (norammlay 750MHz to 2150 MHZ) can go to 2650 MHz. It then can tune in video senders (2.4GHz).

It also usefull to check 1.290GHz ATV TX or 1.4GHz security TV TX.

Can you tell me then why the Aldi website shows the Lidl specials every week.

If you do a search here for Lidl threads a lot of them will show this link for their specials.

    For Example

Need a caffeine intake this morning bucks? or maybe a bucks intake :D

Aldi is in direct competition with Lidl - they are both german companies - aldi is privately owned - and is actually split in two...Aldi sud (south) and Aldi nord (north)...one of the Aldi brothers owns sud, the other owns nord...cant remember which one operates in ireland but you can get that info here .

They both have specials every week.

thats my input of trivia and useless info for today:p

    I stand corrected.

No caffeine needed. A bottle of water and a ciagrette would be nice. Office is like a sauna in this humidity.:)

Actually the brothers are Theo & Karl Albrecht. The business was formed in the late 1940's in Essen, Germany. AFAIK the name ALDI is derived from ALbrecht DIscount.

Aldi Süd operates in Ireland, the Aldi bros have an agreement as to where they trade - avoiding direct competition against each other.

well, thats my 2c worth ;)

I have one of the Lidl satellite systems. It's not bad actually - CNN, CNBC, MTV, MTV 02 and two other music channels (plus several extra German channels) - and no fee to pay !

I'm hoping to set up the new BBC free to air system as well.

What would be my best option to do so -
Get a secondhand Sky reciever and dish, or a new dedicated reciever and dish (as advertised in the Buy & Sell for c.€269) ?

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

Didn't some pensioner die last year while rushing in Lidl to buy a set top box?

    Thats correct.

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

If you want Astra 19E , Hotbirds13E etc, then a €250 to €500 FTA system is best. DIY install is possible, but many people finde they need an installer (Add €25 to €100).

You need to buy receiver, LNB, dish, CT100 cable, connectors and sealing tape.

It won't do Digital text or BBC Interactive. Many satellite channels inc BBC only have limited or no teletext compared with terrestrial.
The remote usually will not work your TV.
It has to be manually retuned if Radio or TV changes channel
There is only now and next TV program.

If you have not had a Sky box you can:
Subscribe to Sky World (€60, but one month only)
Get Receiver Box, LNB, Cable, SCART, remote (does TV too), connectors, sealing, dish and Instal for about €15
Downgrade to minimum (about €20 per month or family pack €27), the day after it is installed, giving one month notice, and cancel after a year. Add it all up and it is good value.
    BBC Interactive & text
Program guide even for RTE, NEt2, TV3, TG4
Program listings and info for over a week ahead
Timer change channel and recording via program listings

    Summary
If you want only Free programs on 28E inc BBC, then a Digibox subsidized install (one per houshold) is best.

If you want *ANYTHING* not on Sky's 28E platform then a Not-Sky-box is best.

If you want free hard disk recording then either a €200 approx card (not €80 ones like Skystar2, they not for living room feeding) in a PC or a Satellite PVR (€800?) is best.

A Sky+ PVR can be used without a viewing sub, but won't record BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies in Ireland (only records EPG channels, not manually added ones). It does require a €15 per month "recording rental" though that may be halved shortly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭dmeehan

is there any more word (ie. rumours) on sky chopping the sky+ subscription?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    Thanks for the info watty.

However, what are the syetems that are on offer in the Buy & Sell like ?

i.e. you just purchase a dish and reciever (and install) and "away you go !"

    no Sky connection(s).
I believe these systems are also available from Satellite Specialists (mentioned on this board) for €219.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Currently
1 x PC based Digital Satellite receiver with Four LNBs / Satellites on it
    2 x Sky Digiboxes at 28.2E
    1 x Analog Satellite receiver on 13E
    1 x Analog Satellite receiver on 19E

No subscriptions to anyone for anything except we to pay for Phone, Electricity, Gas and Bin.

I buy either from recommended dealers (such as www.satellite.ie, www.satcure.co.uk), regular advertisers in specialist magasines or local reputable dealer. I might buy someting S/H out of Buy& Sell or a paper if desperate and an expert on what I'm buying!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    Thanks for the info watty.

Just to clarify (I'm new to all this - double dutch to me !) the reciever I have (bought in lidl) will not pick up new BBC free to air channels ? (somebody here said it was an analogue reciever)

If I replaced just the reciever, and re-focused my current dish, I would get new BBC fta channels ? Yes ?

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Yes, or add an extra LNB on a bracket and the dish can get tow satellites at once, one for the analog box and one for the Digital.

The LNBs and Dish on the analog "Welltech" are fine. The cable is rubbish and needs replaced.

Lidl in south of UK did actually do a low cost DIGITAL receiver a month or so back.

If you haven't had a Sky offer, it is still best value for BBC even including a minimum 1 year sub (downgrade sub to min after one month). The none Sky boxes won't do the BBC 1 week program guide, text or interactive.

Thanks again for your help watty.

I reckon I will just get a digital reciever and the extra LNB.

For those who want analogue satellite, LIDL are selling their package of a Box, LNB and dish for again €59.99 (from memory-sorry if i'm wrong) with stock arriving on Monday 11/08/03.
No sign of the FTA digital boxes yet at LIDL.
Another couple of useful items are a LED Satellite finder for €9.99
and an LCD Digital Multimeter for €3.99.

and an LCD Digital Multimeter for €3.99.

Things to do with analog Satellite Kit:

    1) use it to find 19E, 13E, 5W etc

    2) Watch German, CNN, MTV, Int. Eurosport on 19E
    3) Watch Arte, France5, RAI1,2,3 BBC World, DW TV on 13E
4)Watch French Secam on 5W (No Colour on PAL set), France1..5 etc

    5) With an ADX+ box and 3" wire aerial on the ADX+ it can pickup VideoSenders.

    6) With a preamp instead of LNB it can pickup Amateur TV on 1295 MHz (Big repeaters in Cork and Dungarvan) or some security cameras on 1400Mhz.

The LNB and Dish is good of Digital or Analog.

If it is the same coax as last time it is only any use for FM Radio aerial. Buy some CT100 coax for the LNB to box connection.

    7)
The Dish and LNB alone is not bad for 60 Euro and will give Astra 1 Digital or Hotbirds Digital on a digibox with a manual LNB changeover switch.

It gives you a LED bar representation of the optimum gain for particular dish position. It has a sensitivity knob
which means the accuracy is very high. You alas cannot differentiate betwen 2A and 2D like you can do with a spectrum meter, but then again those devices are upwards of €300.

Think i'll buy one of them and use it to line up my dish correctly during the winter when the storms knock it out of aligment.

It says on the leaflet that you get canal+ and i've this in pubs which are showing live soccer matches.

Is there many english speaking channels?

Also, its says on the lidl leaflet " one item per customer - ticket system in place" - does this mean i can go out to lidl today(saturday) and get a ticket instead qeueing on thursday morning? Any help would be great

You are going to have to be in the top 5 in the queue to get one of these packs. You have been warned. In March there was a queue of at least 50 in Limerick for the same package.

what time do ye think would be the best time to start qeueing at to be guaranteed a satellite?

Here is me now with all this lovely info about the Lidl Sat offer.

Hwever, as I am no techie, would it help me!, as I already have a EPG FTA Sky no subs equipment set up receiving 103 channels mixed between TV and "Digital Radio" that I really enjoy.

What could a person in Donegal expect to receive using the Lidl SAT package. As it is clearly a bargain price [I think] and I am never one to overlook a bargain, that could beofuse to me or a friend?..
