What is the best car you have driven so far ?

It can be modern or classic , large or small, brand new or 10 years old.

I'm not necessarily thinking about fast cars - just the car you liked the most - the best all-rounder for comfort, handling, looks or whatever.

'84'ish Porsche 944 when I was 19.... very cool car
& '94'ish 328iS Beemer which made the porsche seem slow!
(Both belonged to me bro... who like Carn drives a big V70 since he had kids:D & a fairly huge accident)

Car I've had the most fun in however was my trusty old '88 Daihatsu Charade 1.0 TD, in its day it out performed almost any petrol 1.4 a 19yr could get insured on..... still miss that old thing, was difficult making the move from 85mpg to 30mpg when I bought me 316i

A person did a u turn as i was passing by, spun me around and i crashed into a shop front.

Suffice to say i was hurt bad, and the other driver drove off leaving me in car.

Cant comment any more legal reasons.

I haven't had the opportunity to drive a huge array of machinery, but of the cars I have driven, my absolute favourite was the Ford Focus I rented earlier this summer. A great handling car.

Next best would be the Mondeo I rented last summer - not quite as good as the Focus in handling terms, but a brilliant long-distance cruiser, especially as a diesel.

The worst I've driven would either be the '93 Ford Escort 1.3 I drove daily for ages (very underpowered, and not as reliable as I'd have liked either), or a '93 Opel Astra I test drove - the gearshift in that car was so bad it took away any positive impressions I may have had - changing gear felt like stirring treacle

Mate of mine had a Corvette in the States. Took it for a test drive :)

    1969 (?) 3.2 liter (or was it 3.6?) triple-carb E-Type Jaguar.
That bonnet goes on for miles in front of you and the roar of that engine...........

Probably the best car I've ever 'driven' was for the astounding distance of 500 yards. Other than that I'd have to pick between my sister's Punto Sporting which is quite fun around town, or my other sister's 2.0l 626 which can be coaxed into going like stink around back roads.

Mercedes Benz CLK200, was lovely compared to any other car I've driven.

MG ZR, handled like it was on rails. Even though it was a 1.4, it had loads of juju and begged to be driven hard, like the bad girl it was.

Unfortunately, I had a crash on Saturday and it's now a write off.

I got a shot in Michael Schumacher's F2003-GA ferrari last night all around the streets of Monaco.

But then my alarm clock went off. :(

Boxster S - it handles beautifully and my current car a e36 M3. goes like sh*t off a shovel and has room for 4 adults and a set of golf clubs. What more could you want ;)

I've been a passenger in a Vanquish, but was too in awe to say "can I have a spin in it?" I would have been too nervous of scratching it to drive it anyway...Absolutely, truly, madly, deeply wonderful. Quiet, understated, sheer heaven on wheels.

I was hitching as a student and managed to talk a Masarati driver into giving me a lift.

And what am I driving now...a f**kin Focus - crap car, don't know why you all think they such good handling. They are as bland a brown paper.

i have drove alot of cars in my life, one of my old jobs was picking cars up at the docks and then driving them to the dealers or whoever bought them, but i have to say the best one had to be 330 bmw, my god what a car, smooth fast and looked the business.

My old Impreza turbo. Get into it in the morning, turn the key and set every house and car alarm of in the estate. Warm it up and it just went like stink. It brought a smile to my face every time I got into it and for a 2 litre car it would send the speedo off the clock any time you wanted it to, amazing, I miss it a lot. I traded it in for a 02 WRX and to say it feels slow compared to my old one would be an understatement. The handling on the new one is fantastic though, as it does not recognise corners as being an obstacle it just goes around the as if it was a straight road. I was once in a Ferrari 348TS(TB?) and it looked like it was put together by Ralph Wiggum, it sounded great and when you wanted to pull out from a side road everyone stopped to let you out.

Haven't driver that many, but an older model Clio 16V was fun. I still see the odd Williams around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭Hecate

A classic 1976(ish) Land Rover, around a field, the way it was meant to be driven :)

No marks on the gear stick to tell you what gear your in, and a huge red button for engaging the 4 wheel drive. This thing could pull it's way out of a near vertical gradient by sheer brute force.

WRC ESCORT and ex Fisher Subaru the one he crashed on molls gap and had rebuilt I was part of the service team of the guy who bought it, Didn't get much of a spin but still I drove it.

Had the great experience of sitting with Frank Meagher while he was testing the WRC Escort, that man was talented.

    Best experince of my life.

used to work for a company who was owned by FIAT... you could get a 15% discount.. not bad... needless to say the car park was full of alfa's and puntos.....

anyway once a year they would bring down a car transporter truck full of cars for staff members to test drive.... needless to say there was a queue for the alfa spider convertable and the fiat coupé...

oh my god they have to be the best cars i have ever driven... the alfa spider was such a joy of a car to drive... it was so smooth.. the gearshift was so smooth and the acceleration was genius... it was 2.0 litre i think.... the fiat coupe was so damn fast it was unreal.. the acceleration was unbeleivable.. it pinned you to the seat.. didnt feel like a safe car though... a bit unpredictable...

but my favourite drive has to be the alfa spider.... might buy one some day...

Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4wd. Finest handling & best accelerating car...and then the turbo kicks in.....WOOF WOOF!!!

Skylines & Evos are bloody quick but for pure driving pleasure I would have to say 1971 Dodge Challeger R/T. So much room it's not funny - like sitting in an armchair! And with a 7 litre big-block V8 throbbing away under the bonnet... goddamn... never to speak of when you plant boot... almost make you wet yourself :P

it was a chevvy with an enormous twin cab in the front and a massive flatbed at the back

had something stupid like a 5 litre engine!!

when you drive it it feels like you're going to run the other cars over

I drove a friends Honda S2000, and it was really good, very fast and with the roof down, it makes you feel like you have arrived!

I also drove a 5 litre black mustang, but it was as dull as ditch water....

99 Fiat Sciento Sporting, had a 1.1 engine so was really fast as its a small car, could beat any normal sized two litre at the lights any day. Also had the sporting bosy kit and a bonnet vent to keep beast cool so it looked the biz aswell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Gerry

Hehe, the best one has to be your first car. I bought it a week ago, for $700. Its a dodge dynasty, with a 3 litre v6. Goes like the wind, can beat any seicento off the line. Its only got 300k on it, and the steering is a bit ****ed, but everything else works. Engine has a bit of a rough idle, but still seems to have most of its horses intact. Flooring it at medium speed results in tire squeal, hilarious. Its not a terrible gas guzzler, its a mitsubishi built engine, with multi-point fuel injection. Gets 350 miles out of a tank that you can fill for $20:) Insurance is $460 for 6 months, all in all fairly bowled over. Only problem is that free parking takes about 10 - 20 minutes to find in San Francisco.... but I shouldn't complain :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 120 ✭✭test999

The funny thing about the 99 Fiat Sciento Sporting is that it's 54BHP and it's 735Kg weight makes it sound like a real performer on paper, i.e. a 0.73 horses per kilogram which is up there with sports cars! but the 0-60mph of 14 seconds tells me it's a dog.
    solly!
were did it all go so wrong :D

Nicest car I ever drove was a powerful deep-wine coloured Chrysler Sebring Convertible (see here for info) on holidays in Maryland, USA in 2000. Drove it with the top down on a beautiful sunny day going up the beltway to Baltimore. She was a beaut'.

Nicest car I ever owned is the only car I ever owned - a metallic green Volkswagen Polo 1.4l 5-door (which can be seen here).

yeah, defo, the sebring is a nice jam jar, last time I was in LA I rented one for a week. Drove around with the roof down for 6 days, nearly burnt my head off!

Not the most perfect or expensive car ive driven but a '79(i think) Dodge charger was the scariest and brutal car, Lifting that monster clutch and flooring it left a very long line of melted rubber on completly dry road, the car crabed soooo badly trying to get its ass to swap places with the front while i was fighting to keep it straight, never have i ever been so intimidated by a car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭G

had a go in a few nice cars; M3 - insane power, not for Irish roads! Old Volvo T5s have some poke too.

Best car I drove has to be the Mercedes SL500.

    1. 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 - Very fast, love the engine noise.
    2. 1992 Hona Civic VTi - The best car that I ever owned.
    3. 2002 Alfa Romeo GTV - Really like it. (But its a Fiat, so it had to come third!)

Well I will have to stick up for my car and say the best car I have ever driven is my Ibiza Cupra 20VT.

In terms of looks its just a bit different to the standard mk3 Ibiza nothing major. Inside its got plenty of cow hide, Air Con, Climate Control, 4 air bags and all electric widows, mirrors, sunroof etc. In fact the only options for the car was a CD changer. Preformance is very good as standard and very easily improved on... and the look on BMW drivers faces when you go by is always worth a giggle ;).

A good bit of changes from standard have been carried out to improve the safety and preformance of the car. Oettinger remap, Miltek exhaust (its not a loud exhaust when driving normally), Forge DV, Brembo 4 pot brakes, H&R PCS Coilovers and wider wheels with spacers to give the car a wider track to settle down the tail end which can be a bit gittery at high speeds (on a track, not on public roads).

All in all its a great little car with plenty of poke and has held its own around Mondello against some much more expensive cars and has even passed one or two of them ;).
