Anyone got any experience of installing IRCu and srvX on Linux (RH7.3)? I followed the instructions here but ircd won't start (no errors). I find the config offensive from a usability pov, so it's probably something to do with that:

I had headbanging getting irc set up myself,
but you could try adding the line:

    M:64.246.46.13::Testing irc.foot.ie:6667

at the beginning of your config.

    Hope that does it,

Bugger, bad copy, I already had that. Well, similar:
    M:irc.foot.ie:64.246.46.13:4400:1

I'll have another tinker with it now.

Just wondering, does it have to be IRC? Cos if it's just a general chat server you're looking to set up you should try jabber. It's a piece of piss.

Probably is IRC you specifically want, but just a thought.

I'd like to do jabber but clients is an issue, none of my users won't have jabber clients. Most of them won't have IRC clients either, but there's loads of Java interfaces to IRC. I don't think there's any for Jabber. (I'd be delighted if you'd correct me if I'm wrong.)

By Java based, I'm assuming you're looking for a Java applet for a website?

    There's JabberApplet here

    But it's a bit ugly.

However, as Jabber is an XML based protocol (i.e. it uses an XML stream to send and recieve messages) a client can be set up in PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, CFM, whatever you want....

There's clients for mobile phones and everything.

There's even a library for developing Flash based Jabber clients, but I can't seem to find it right now... Holler if you want me to take a look.

    Check out

    http://www.jabber.org/user/clientlist.php?Platform=Other

And have a general browse around http://www.jabber.org/
