I have a SAR 715, what settings do I need to enter?
I have a list of what to put in for Eircom, but while they're similar packages, their not "exactly alike".

Hmm, I've found that the DNS is not needed and yes, it's chap on d-links.

Solwise routers don't work with Netsource , surely you've seen all the threads about it? hmmmm , I flogged mine on ebay in the end and recouped my original outlay.

    Why wouln't they?
They work with Eircom products, which netsource simply resells (using it's own servers and bandwidth etc.).

Trust me SyxPak , I spent 4 weeks solid complaining to Solwise & Netsource regarding the issue but to no avail.

Netsource handle authentication differently than €ircon.I'd advise you to sell it while you can and save yourself the hassle.

P.S. Both Solwise & Netsource are aware of the issue but have yet to do anything about it (8 weeks later now at this stage).

"SAR-01PA - A UK compatible ADSL modem which uses the Alcatel Chipset." from here

"Both the 715 & the 705 use the powerful Globespan/Virata platform ....and Virata 8.2 ISOS..." from here.

    Balls.

That said, i've only had a chance to play with it for an hour or two.

Has ANYONE else used a Solwise external router with Netsource?

carbsy, what do you mean "different authentication"?
According to the netsource data sheet it's PAP.
And D-link's seem to need CHAP.

I'm hoping that I can reply to this thread in an hour or 3 from home over my new dsl connection :)

The problem seems to be at the Netsource end as Solwise gear works with €ircon and IOL and virtually every other ISP in Europe ffs!

Netsource servers do something different during the authentication process that the router doesn't like and allways returns a 'Link Down - Authentication Error' message no matter it the router is set to PAP , CHAP or CRAP for that matter. ;)

I spent a whole weekend at the command line interface monitoring every lil' detail but to no avail.

I just don't want you to have to go through the same agro and fustration that I (and many others if you search threads , both here and on the solwise forum) had to endure.

    carb.

P.S. The problem runs much deeper than simply selecting PAP or CHAP.

It's a pity tbh , as both the SAR-110 & 715 are great routers with some fantastic features. It really sickened me having to flog it on ebay a few weeks after buying it.

Was all set to get a solwise also, but after reading the posts here, just went with the dsl-504.

Has a few security issues (in default shipping config), but are easily resolved, and seems to run rock solid.

    All is not lost.

Apparently there's a new firmware out, our current one is well out of date (bootloader is 1.16 as opposed to 1.21, front end is a good few revisions behind).
Hope to have it flashed tonight, and will try again in the morning.

    Hey Longfield,
You mentioned some security issues regarding the D-Link 504 routers, what are they? Also do you know of anywhere that discribes how to secure the D-Link 504?

    Cheers,

Seems that while Eircom use CHAP at their DSLAMS/RADIUS servers, then bump it over to netsource, Netsource use PAP on their ISP servers.
    The 715 apparently can't change mid-connect.

I really don't see any advantage in changing auth protocols, especially going from CHAP to PAP.
And I also don't see why it would be so hard to implement an auto-detect function in te 715.
They have a week if I get no reply to that post, and 2 weeks if there's word of a firmware/bootcode update on the way.

Oh, btw, flashed the firmware and bootcode last night, was able to maintain a connection, but couldn't auth - like you said carbsy.

    Apparently they have :)

using the latest firmware there's an option when you go to edit the PPP configs for auto detection of the authentication protocols. Now, whether this happens at both stages or just at the first it something which remains to be seen, but hopefully it will.

An excellant resource for all things DSL-504 related is http://shadow.sentry.org/~trev/dsl50x.html .

The guy who wrote that site and software regurarily posts at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=82 , which is a really good discussion forum for all things specifically adsl related.

    I've just tried it there.
The firmware is really nice, except for one little niggle.
The "auto" setting is setup fo the DialIn interfae, not the DialOut
and I can't seem to change it.
I reckon Netsource should hange from PAP to CHAP, as it's what the eircom DSLAMS/RADIUS servers use and would allow people to use more routers. Not to mention that CHAP is encrypted.
