Why do Birds bob their heads when they walk?

    Can any body tell me why do Birds (of the feathered varity) bob their heads when they walk?

    If you are serious - it is because they need to balance, they only have two legs which are side by side so to control their front to back equilibrium - they shift their weight to the middle and to the back etc etc.

    If you are not serious - I have unfortunately never had a bird bobbing her head when she walked, only when she lay down.
