My index finger is splitting from playing :(

No blisters and such justt a crack in the calus wid no blood
I been playing a good bit as of late so that whay its happening.

Im using .10 's on my eletric but I plan on going up to .12 /.13 and
getting nice fat frets on my guitar for dem big bends;)

I heard that Flea uses Super Glue to seal up his fingers,
I'm not man enuff for that.

Any hints on how to toughen up the finger top skin for these
    heavier gauge strings?

    dip em in viniger etc????Sandpaper?

Play straight after showering it hardens them up really quickly, also I've been told that rubbing the tips of your fingers on a concrete wall after playing helps but I've never tried it.

There is a glue substance you can get, it's called liquid skin or something equally unoriginal, if you've split the finger you'll either have to take a break till it heals or get liquid skin.

    mmmmmnnnn,

    liquid skin eh?

what will they think of next?

    Will check it out!

Them other ideas would just build up the callous
which buy playing a lot should do, but i wanna max out to da edge, iron finger like.

Supposedly rubbing metholated(sp?) spirits on your finger tips dries out the skin and hardens them! Other thatn that just keep on playing. You're going to put 13 on an electric??? What tuning are you playing in? Don't forget that thicker strings are harder to bend and break more easily.

    Spirits- good one.

Going up to .12 or .13 and tuneing down half a step cause its easier on my voice.
I love digging in and attacking the strings hence the need for bigger ones.
Tone and durability cause in my exp the thinner the string the
    quicker you break it.
    .9's are for girls:D

I also gotta bit of a Stevie Ray Vaughan Fixation going at the mo so he used to go up to .16's ( I sh!t you not)

Getting in to some slide as well.

I like to work when doing bends, I luuuve attacking the strings
so I suspect I'd better get use to split finger tips.

    Devoloping Tone is da bomb

I know SRV used 12 or 13's mainly. I use 10's, tuned to Eb and my Floyd Rose is nicely happy. What sort of guitar and stuff do you play?

PRS SE ( About to be Fully loaded with Dragon II Pickups)

Running direct to PA from a Line6 POD ( Lovely Fender Blackface tone)

    Funk/Bluesy/Reggea Rock Power Trio.

Only 3 of us so I need to make a lot of impact with my plank

I was never a huge fan of PRS's for some reason. Never played one but they always spelled nu-metal to me (yes I know McCartney and Santana use them)

What do you think of the POD?

    One mans meat.....

    http://www.prsguitars.com/showcase/current/sp_santse_cherry.htm

Thats my baby. I dont like flame tops/gold/go faster stripes so
this suits me down to the ground.
I have also been into these guitars since old metal was still quite new:ninja:

If you play guitar, any style , then get a POD.
Thats what I think. I despised digital FX for guitars but this little
yoke has changed my life (musically!)
Physicall modelling is what its all about, this aint solid state craporama etc. It does sound like a Fender Twin or a Mesa Boogie or a Marshall or what ever takes your fancy.

The only thing better than the Fender Twin noise on my POD
    is a Fender Twin.

The only amps that aint so hot are the AC30's which to me sound a bit muddy.

I got the original POD so I'm sure the noises have devoloped since then.

Its great- carry your whole rig in a sholder bag, turn up and plug into any PA and get god tone.

I never heard anyone dis a POD actually (I bet they get dissed now)

I got mine second hand for under 200 yo yo's.
    Nuff Saidww)

http://www.espguitars.com/html/hammett_kh602.html My bad boy! Except mine isn't neck through and it has small dot inlays.

I've always wanted to get a pod but the price is fairly bloody high, especially if you want to control with a midi controller. The board costs more than the pod!!

Thanks Juno. Yeah, the emg's are quite fierce. And the pointy headstock comes in handy in the middle of a gig if anyone throws anything at ya. "whoops, did my guitar go through your chest?"

BigglesWorth: What's wrong with your neck? Is it just bowed or what? have you had a look at the truss rod?

If your finger is splitting but it's not a blister, it might be that you're allergic to some material that makes the strings, try change make or kind, it might work.

I can't use nickel strings on my bass for this reason, when I switched to steal it just disappeared (er.. the crack, not the bass :D)

Well its a bent around the 17-18th fret and also the metal bar things that seperate the frets have a load of chips in them which are catching the strings:mad: I tightened the nut thing thats in the neck but its not changing it(i am turning it the rite way), so i have to get it replaced, its making hammer'ons and pulloffs arquard and the sound is slightly off.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Bent in what way? Is it the fretboard or the actual neck? Is it a harsh angle? As for the frets, you can get them polished in any decent guitar shop. Or just get them replaced, one by one if you need. It's about €20-30 per fret depending on where you go. I think a total refret is about €150.

Its off by about 2mm which makes a pretty ****ty song, the neck is warped i checked with a few people i was just wondering what the prices were on them, I asked in waltons and got some ludacrous price:D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Is there any chance you can take a photo of the amount of warp? It should be possible to fix it even if the truss rod isn't adjusting it. As for the frets, it's not that hard to replace them AFAIK.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 531 ✭✭✭juno75

, it might be that you're allergic to some material that makes the strings

cheers mate, did not think of that, I have just been using
ernie balls rather than XL's which may be it.

As for getting neck/frets fixed up - sounds like you need a refret
-quite common and not to extensive and also truss rod/intonation / action set up.

all standard stuff, they guy who does it for musician inc. is very good.try them;)

You wouldnt really see it with a foto. i was planning on getting a new neck for ages and i just need to find where

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Fair enough so. It'd probably cheaper to get it fixed than replaced. But if you're minds made up, try www.warmoth.com or www.stewmac.com What are you going to be doing with the neck you have now?
