Windows Mobile 2003 (for Pocket PC)

Last week saw the launch of the new version of the Microsoft OS for PDAs, Windows Mobile 2003 (for Pocket PC)

One of the key updates is the Connection Manager to make the whole process of mobile use easier particulalry with Bluetooth and WiFi connections more info.

On the heals of the launch came announcements of more Pocket PCs with integrated Bluetooth, with the consumer level iPAQ 1940, mid-range iPAQ 2210 and enterprise iPAQ 5550 (which also integrated WiFi). Toshiba have also announced their e750 with integrated WiFi is now available with the new OS, as well as Dell offering it's Axim X5 with the new OS (although Dell are yet to announce a new model with integrated wireless) although an article in Infoworld outlines a wireless PDA they are gearing up for launch

Worth noting the move from standard SD (memory only) slots to more widespread support of SDIO, whereby an SD slot can be used as an input/output interface rathr than just for flash memory storage. So the ability to use upcoming products like Socket's SDIO WiFi card, although it might still be worth going for a model with both an integrated CF and SDIO slot as CF peripherials and memory are still a lot cheaper than their SD equivalents.

Anyone in the Palm camp, may be interested to note a new version of the Tungsten T is due out soon, with more internal memory and hopefully updated to the newer OS 5.2 and supposed to have a better screen. Also, had a go on the Sony PEG-TG50 with built in Bluetooth and it's a nice device although anyone who likes the full length screen of the NX and NR models might not be too impressed.

So looks like Bluetooh is being embraced more and more, with a welcome in-road into the consumer level with the likes of the iPAQ 1940, and more options of adding it with an SDIO card to a non-integrated device.

I've been trying to find out from Dell when they'll have the mobile 2003 upgrade available to order from their website. It's already available at the UK and US sites but first there's the exchange rate and then the postage and packaging to Ireland....Has anyone been able to find a date for the release of the upgrade in Ireland?

one of the posters in this thread on the Tech board says he work for them and deals with the Axim line, might be worth asking him if he has any details?

might be waiting a little longer for that Axim upgrade, some people were commenting on the X5s being slower with the new OS and DELL confirmed they are looking into it...
