    umm.,.. maybe

RTL Slovenia obviously need some money
    There is an Ad on 24 hotbird 3 transponder 80- 12300 27.5 3/4 v

So if you want to transmit something using 4Mb/s 24/7
    contact +386 1 475 21 50 boris.bergant@rtvslo.si

Ok it is not huge bandwidth and you would need FIARCO as the uplink (even though it is not fixed rate being only discounted prepaid calls) but it would be interesting to see how much it would cost to setup the boards ISP by satellite.. - perhaps a stick to beat the Telco's with

(don't forget that 4Mb is the same as 400 ADSL connections at 512k with 50:1 contention)

Satellite ISPs have had a very hard time over the last few years. Normally all the bandwidth is snarfed by tossers with multiple (50 or 100 or so) file download sessions open thus obliterating the bandwidth for other users. EuropeOnline tried an unmetered product and I think it went into receivership. This forced most sISPs to limit bandwidth on a per MB basis and develop a slack time (off peak) file delivery service.

The disadvantage for Boards is that a satellite ISP is an asymmetric network and there would be more time spent trying to solve downlink problems than would be profitable. Each subscriber would require, in addition to a phoneline, a compatible DVB-S card and a dish and LNB pointing at the relevant satellite. If the transponder used was off the main Sky carrying Astra then it would probably require another LNB and or dish. This would limit the market considerably.

Compared to a standard ISP configuration via ordinary phonelines, the satellite ISP option for a Boards ISP would not be attractive either financially or technically.

BTW you are not the real Captain Midnight that was caught by a Ham Radio head who recognised the particular text character generator used in Captain Midnight's uplink hijack/protest in the 1980s? :) There are probably very few satellite tv heads in Ireland who ever heard of that or were even around for it.

EuoropeONline are very much alive and kicking, but yes, the rest of the post is correct.

EON now have a metered "FastSurf" which is pretty good value for money in sat download terms (does still need modem connection for upstream) ..fact of the matter is, for the reasons explained by jmcc, sat download services are very limited by available bandwidth, and cannot atm compete with adsl for these reasons.

That said for ppl unable to get adsl, some sat packages, such as offered by EON (FastSurf) are pretty much as good as it gets imho.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

I forgot to mention that some other companies invested to get it out of receivership. :) I still actually use EON as a back up for large file transfer work.

However the reason that they failed in the first place was down to bad bandwidth management. Any ISP these days has to have decent bandwidth management.

With regard to Satellite ISP's having to have a data limit. This can be slightly misleading.

Data Limits inply a cap. If you reach a certain level you will be shut off. This is not the case with 90% of the packages available.

Most sISP's have a fair Use Policy or a Fair Access Policy. [Same thing]

This has data thresholds which are often calculated every 5 mins over 24 hours. If you abuse then system you get slowed down in your speed, to curtail that amont of bandwidth you can eat up on other fee paying customers who have a right to their fair share of the bandwidth.

You are never cut off. Simply slowed until you data usage come back into line and your speed returns.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    JM

in theroy you could use a satellite ISP to power Boards ISP.
What you could do is have a computer with a DVB-S Card connect to an unmetered service for example Silvermead and then have it connect under a Flat Rate package through an ordinary 56k line.
In order to run it have it connected to the server running the dial-up connections and it would work out fairly cheap that way.
    What do you think?
