after downloading virtua racing deluxe and wgens, and playing a couple of games I tried increasing the screen size to full, was the resolution in the megadrive/32x always that low or is the emulator stretching the windowed image to save CPU time? I know the megedrive was never 1024x768, but I thought I remembered it being a little better than my C64.

Standard TV rez, plus 32X emulation is far from perfect.

prehaps I should try to find a rom for genises version of VR as opposed to the 32x version. if it exists, as recall the cart' had a 'virtua fx' chip in it which was their excuse for it being so expensive at the time, £70 I believe. cool game though, the origonal (good) arcade racer!

The mega drive version of virtua racing is not supported by any emulator and chances are never will.

that chip along with the snes S-DD1 are the biggest mysteries of 16-bit console emulation. not a single piece of documentation has been uncovered to help in understanding or let alone emulating the functions of either of them.

The SDD1 is just an encryption ball o' monkies. Thats where the problem lies. It would probably be sorted if there was interest in emulation of the snes bits and pieces but there isn't. Its unfortunet but a lot of the games with bugs that could relatively easily be fixed will never be.

As for the SDD, they just bipass the encryption (as they seem to do with everything these days) by just making gfx packs available for download for sf alpha 2 and star ocean. Not perfect, but it works.

Virtua racing will more than likely get an arcade release on mame as that is where the heavy emulation efforts are these days.
