Weird Fifa Rankings

The new Fifa World Ranking are out today at:

    http://www.fifa.com/en/rank/index.html?ttl=480

Ireland and Albania have played two matches since the rankings last month, Ireland won the two, Albania lost the two. But, Ireland have dropped 1 point and Albania have gained 8 points.

I thought that the rankings might be the results from the month before but if you look at the website it say's:
Continental qualifiers and the FIFA Confederations Cup have set the pace for a busy month in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. With a total of 130 matches to take into account, it is not surprising that some considerable shifts can be seen in the Ranking.

I never even thought it was possible to drop points because wouldn't there have to be at least one team on minus points.

Columbia gained 50 points because they came 2nd in the Confederations Cup group stages, such a joke.

    Anyone else confused?

The rankings are veru misleading. Ireland dropped one place simply because other teams did better over the same period. Ireland may have won 2 games but others may have won 3 or 4.

Albania probably went up because they didn't do as badly as some teams that were previously above them.

btw - the changes column is ranking not points as you seem to think.

Think you have to compare recently gained points to points acquired months and years ago which may have ceased to be considered this month.

i.e. If we got to the 2nd round of the World Cup and points gained from this were given a validity of 1 year then they would be getting subtracted from our total around now.

Sorry, I am not talking about changes in rankings, I'm talking about points. Ireland had 704 points last month, they have won two matches and they have now got 703 points. They did actually climb one spot because Portugal dropped more points than Ireland.

I just don't know how they can win two matches out of two and still drop points (not places!).

BTW you can see last months rankings here:

    Ah sorry about the confusion.

The ranking points are calculated over an eight year period - therefore every month the points total has moved on a month. In this situation Ireland must of scored 1 more point in May 1995 than in May 2003 and therefore have 1 point less
