    A Multi-player Computer Games Mini-Convention

    From

    12th to 13th of August

    At

    The Marino Institute of Education
    Griffith Avenue
    Marino
    Dublin 3

    What is Counter –Con?

Counter-Con is a multi-player computer games mini-convention, or in simpler terms, it’s a LAN Party! Two days of non-stop action with a few tournaments thrown in for good measure.

    When is it?

12th and 13th of August from 9am in the morning till 9pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. Or, that’s what they have told us…….it might just run longer.

    Where is it?

The Marino Institute of Education which is just off the Griffith Avenue in Marino. I’ll let them speak for themselves:
“We offer a selection of well-equipped rooms, suitable for conferences, training, seminars and interviews. We have 14 conference rooms varying in capacity and style. Every room overlooks the beautiful gardens and grounds of the Institute and every event is fully supported by our staff to ensure that the event runs smoothly “

    What’ll it cost?

Simple, £15 for the week-end or £10 per day. After that it’s just food money. All games and competitions are free to enter, just put your name down with the Front Desk Staff.

    What will be running?

You name it, we’ll run it. Quake (I,II & III), Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Diablo, Diablo II, C&C (all of them), Age of Empires & Age of Kings, Starcraft, Total Annihilation, South Park Rally, Half Life and, of course, Half Life: Counter-Strike. In fact, we’ll run anything...just make sure you bring the CD.

    Tournaments?

Yes, 3 of them. Simplest one is an Unreal Tournament Deathmatch, either Last Man Standing or to X amount of Frags. More complex will be Quake II CTF and Half Life Counter-Strike. Both games will have teams of 5 and will be run on a knockout basis. Quake II will be to X amount of points and Counter-Strike will be the best of X games. X’es to be decided when we see how many entrants there are. All tournaments are on a first come, first serve basis. Register with the Front Desk Staff.

    What will I need?

A computer with a netcard that is capable of playing MP games (at least a P166 with a 4Meg Graphics Card). Also, if you have your own Hub and/or Multi-Socket Extension Cable then please bring them.

    How do I book

Fill out the form on this flyer and send it too the address stated, or email us on prebookcc@eircom.net. All prebooks must pay on or before the 11th of August.

    Security, Food & Accomadation.

The rooms will be locked when we aren’t there and there is a resident staff to look after the place. Food is availible on site from 2 dining rooms or a couple of vending machines. One of the Dining Rooms is self-service and pretty cheap. Accomadation is availible on site at £18 per night for Bed and Continental Breakfast or £22 for Bed and Full Irish Breakfast. Accomadation is in Single, Twin or Triple Rooms. Rooms are avalible through pre-booking only.

    So, who’s behind this?

Three guys with nothing better to do. Contact anyone of us for more information, preebookings etc or mail infocc@eircom.net.

Dont say its a LAN party when its clearly not. You have to bring your own PC, well fair enough , you have to bring your own network card, not everyone will have one, and our own hubs, what exactly do you guys provide ? an empty room to make money off. wow. They must be teaching you well in that place.Oh yea, we need to bring all the games aswell ?
OK , heres my LAN party, everyone come around to my gaf, but it will cost you an extraordinary amount of money for a serveice I dont provide, bring all your own gear, and you cant stay up late playing games after 9pm , ok ? eek.gif

Jeez dude! It's just like dubLAN, The Proving Grounds and the likes - BYOPC
I'm sure they have servers and hubs/cable, but extras are ALWAYS welcome at an event like this.
    Take a chill, eh?

If I had a PC, I'd go Tal, but alas it is not to be! frown.gif

    All the best,

As Kharn says, we have our own gear...about a km of cable, RJ45's, switch, hubs, a few machines being used as dedicated servers...we can even get you a netcard if you need one, but extra hubs and plug sockets never go astray and we will need them unless we get a last minute sponsor of equipment. Likewise, we don't hgave a plethora of spare computers as we are not an Iternet Cafe and we can't find anyone who will trust us with that amount of games friendly computers for a weekend. Anyway, from personal experience, I have found the MP games players prefer to use thier own machines. Games: We have most of the more popular mainstream games, what we might not have is games that aren't so popular, or every mod/level/map/skin etc. for every mainstream game. If any game you want to play is not listed and you aren't 100% sure you'd like to take the chance that we have it, then bring it along to be sure...thats what I was saying. Not that everyone had to supply their own games.
As for being the same as holding it in someones house and charging for the privilage, way off the mark. How would u like 50-100 people coming to your house with machines for the weekend. This whole idea did start as a house based LAN Party, but due to popular demand among MP gamers that I know personally it got turned into a con. The reason that you are paying for the privilage is to cover costs for the venue and maybe, if we are really lucky, give us some working capital for the next event. We are not in this to make a profit or to screw other players, we are doing this because we want to...Gods know I'll be too dam busy over the weekend to get a game in myself, ergo, we are doing this for the MP games community, not for ourselves.
Finally, the 9pm thing is a pian in the tits, but that is the venues rules and MIE was the only place big enough that we could feasibly afford. 500 pounds for the weekend (including a Friday Night set-up of the LAN). Suggestions to a better cheaper venue are are encouraged and welcomed. The next Counter-Con will be running in October as part of Parasite Games Festival, which leads up to Gaelcon (sorry, don't think there is a Dub-Lan this year), as such it is being subsdised and held in one of the colleges. That will only cost a fiver for one days gaming. We are trying to keep it as cheap as possible.

The game specified was QII CTF, not QIII and after much discussion on another board, we might shift it to UT CTF, CS and QIII DM as that seems a more popular combination.

    My bad , sorry.
I didn't realise you had cable and hubs and the lot. And as for the games , I asumed you meant for people to bring their own , which I now know you didn't mean.
As for that house lan , I was rippin the p1ss wink.gif
I might just show up if I can lug my l33t PC down , but only if Kegser is handcuffed to a chair, I wouldnt trust him with a packet of smarties.
