I was in a toilet the other day and noticed another of those "Bisexual - 19 - looking for good time - 086xxxxxxx" messages scrawled in marker pen on the wall. Forgive my airheadedness but - are any of these true?

Do some people do this to get calls or are they put up by people with a gripe against the actual person with the mobile number - so that they get called by people wanting a good time?

Uhm, I'd think a lot of them are in fact true. For gay and bisexual men theres a lot of cruising and cottaging that goes on.

There are known areas in Cork and Dublin where you can go and pick up a guy just for sex, toilets are well used for sex between strangers. You can meet up for sex in the toilet or you can watch a guy jerk off through a glory hole or do other things

Its a lower form of gaydar.ie

Its sad that people are that desperate for sexual gratification that they need to do this dangerous and slightly mad thing.

Maybe legalising prostitution might help, maybe not.

I work in a gay bar in Cork and had to spend an entire afternoon stripping the paint off the walls in the gents due to such comments. Most seem to be posted by bitchy queens about other bitchy queens. However "cottaging" as yellum detailed, is alive and well in Cork. It's not something that rocks my boat, but i don't criticise people who engage in it either. For some the anonymity, the "danger" is a big turn on. Me? I'd prefer to be curled up on my couch devouring Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix )

i dont particularaly approve of cruising and cottaging but to each man his own, i can hardly cast the first stone. but i was on gaydar.ie the other day and i saw on one guys profile that he had actually posted his phone number on his profile. i thought he was quite stupid to do that.

Aye, and so are old-ish handsets. I know one bloke who juggles four of the buggers and has to keep a notebook with him to remember which numbers each person he has on the go has been given.... More than once he's just chucked a sim in the river as a cheap way out of a relationship.

Can't say I approve, but you have to give credit for the brass neck... It's like having a "public" email address which gets spam and bull****, and a "private" one that you actually read all the time, I guess.

Cottaging is the age old practice of gay men meeting up for sex in public toilets. Made famous by George Michael in March 1997 (I think). Currently the soiurce of much debate as ne laws in the Uk attempt to outlaw such practices.

I've seen it done as bitching, putting people's numbers whom you don't exactly like in public toilets.

Some must be genuine. The sensible pubs tile thier toilets so there is very little people can right on. (the bits in between the tiles - but their easily dealt with)

I would imagine that most of the numbers listed in toilets around the country are put there by people trying to get the enemys spammed by random people.

Or just people trying to annoy there 'friends'

i find women's toilets in gay and alternative venues to be much more descriptive. there are a few numbers on the back of toilet doors allright but when you are having a pee you can read essays there from the many girls who have been before.

some of them are quite good and there are a good few poets and seanchais around

you would know though they are in the age bracket of 16-22 with all the angst.
