    Hi

I have a Dell XP Pro box onto which I want to add Linux. I am reasonably happy with windows/software setup but not into the intricacies of setting up hard disks, boot records and such like.

Apparently mandrake 9.1 is the one to go for as it is easy to set up and comes with a disk partitioning tool which will resize the NTFS partition.

Can anyone tell me where in Dublin I can get Mandrake CD's - or be willing to burn them for me? I don't have broadband access.

It would be much appreciated, I will pay reasonable costs.

    Thanks

    silverside

it's on the dvd/cd of this months linux format mag
the next one might be out by now, not sure

all modern distros are really easy to set up anyway, not just mdk

TBH for a total newbie, i'd recommend RH9 , have installed mandrake 9.1 , Freebsd and RH9 in the last few weeks, have to say that most stuff just works in RH9, Mandrake looks pretty but seems to be very customised, ie mandrake specific, in RH9 i just instal stuff and it (mostly works) , in Mandrake even though i did a full install kept finding that i need to add things.

Not a very technical analysis but for a newbie, would strongly recommend RH9 , are tons of sites supporting it which makes a difference starting out.

    Thanks,

I will have a look for the magazine and have a go with Mandrake - I will need the NTFS partition resizer which comes with it anyway.

If i find I don't like it I presume I can just reformat the linux partition and install redhat over it anyway. But I don't think I will need much - mainly want kdevelop/gcc , java/netbeans and openoffice.

I'll see how my winmodem gets on with linux as well.

Anyway i'll keep an eye on this board for hints'n'tips.

    Cheers

    s.

hmmm ...didn't notice an ntfs resizer, maybe that's only with a 'professional package' ... what's it called ? it has all the other stuff you want though

Most partitioning programmes should be able to resize existing partitions for you. I like Partition Magic myself

    maxheadroom, Thanks for the offer

I have already ordered it from the UK though, I should have it in the post soon.

FYI, it is also on the cover of this months PCW magazine DVD.

parasite, the partition mangaer is called ntfsresize (part of diskdrake).
