Why is it that people call scooters "mopeds"?

This is a moped. Note that it has a motor and pedals.

These are scooters. Notice that they don't have any pedals!

This contains a good definition of a moped.
The Ohio Revised Code defines a moped, or motorized bicycle, as any vehicle with two tandem wheels or one front and two rear wheels which is capable of being pedaled and is also equipped with a helper motor.

Does it really matter what people call them?

Shops all over Ireland/UK call them Mopeds ,

So i dont think they will change,

Just leave it as it is, No point in trying to change it,

    It's a personal thing...

I can't figure out WHY someone somewhere decided (recently) to start calling scooters mopeds.

Skooter on the quays is a shop that knows what they are.

It would be like calling an IBM PC a Macintosh, they're patently different things.

I'm not trying to change anything/anybody. I'm just ranting :)
