  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭Big Chief

ok felt a bit of a shudder going up the back of my spine when i seen the first pic :p
cos you know you don't want to meet what's behind that clock

least when its behind the clock you can squash it with the clock and find out what it was as it sits on your newspaper.

its those hairy spiders i hate with a passion, still remember waking up and one was in my bedroom while on holiday years and years ago.

It could be worse, there are these wee bugger in Australia, their about 1cm squared in size, but 1 bite will have you on the ground, dead, within an hour.

At least with a spider that size, you wont miss him (with the shoe you throw at him).

In the average lifetime, a human swallows seven spiders.
    Sweet dreams.

But of course, tellox is smart. Tellox looked at picture 1, and didnt look at pictures 2 and 3 because he is arachnaphobic and would have to tear his eyes out if he saw a spider of a huge size.

Seriously though,I remember I saw a ****ing huuuuggeee spider only 3 months back, was about 3cm squared in size... I remember I was at my pc, and I looked to my left, and there he ****ing was. I very very slowly turned my head back around towards my monitor. 30s later,I looked back, and it hadn't moved from its spot. I was completly petrified at this stage. Finally, I summed up the courage to belt it down the stairs, and admist all my fear, I said "mam, spider, my room. ohmygod." So after 15mins of being too scared to go into my room, my mother finally said "for **** sake owen, its just a ****ing spider" while walking up the stairs, and about to enter my room; "I mean for christs sake, your15 years old, and your afraid o, OH JESUS CHRIST WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT!!!"

Jaysus folks yer easily upset. From the replies I was expecting something horrifying... not somebody's pet spider.

    agreed, was expecting something horrible.
Its only a spider. Bigger spider - bigger target, easier to hit from long range :D

    sorry, not afraid of spiders,

    but wasps and hornets???
    im gone....
on the nearest motorbike to the next town at least!!

in all fairness, that looks fake im afraid.

i was in america on holidays a few years back, My sister came running into my room screaming "SPIDER", i ran into her room and i heard (ACTUALLY HEARD) something hit the floor and then the noise of it running, it was a north american wolf-spider (i was told it was anyway) i got it into a litter scoop and threw it into a bucket where it proceeded to try and jump out at me, i fired it out the door into the grass after taking a photo of it in the bucket.

when i showed it to my cousins, they backed away and looked at me in awe, i think they thought i was dumb or very brave... lookin back i think i was naieve to consider it was just an over grown house spider :)

i actually think it hissed at me too :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭GoneShootin

of course its a fake !!

In Pictures 2 and 3, the spider has not moved at all. Now I dont know about youm but if I upset a spider, it recoils back into its web or moves away AT GREAT SPEED. it never just sits there with a gay pose

Picture 1, those legs look to be photoshopped. Also, the size and angle of those legs would suggest that the spiders body would have to be terribly malformed to allow them to sit like that.

    fake i tells ya !

    /edit
my fear is of wasps, i am the slowest person in the world for killing them, just in case that im too slow and i piss one off, and it stings me !! erk !!!!

When I was in Zimbabwe I had to sleep in rooms with spiders. I really hate them but these spiders were really flat and about 4 - 5 cm leg span and harmless. I just forced myself to go to sleep and they'd usually still be in the same place when I woke up in the morning. There was this one though...it was in the back of a jeep and spotted before any of us got in...it was brown and at least the size of my hand (think of an average 22 yr old female's hand) and it was amazing to look at but really gross and we all ran away Monty Python stylee!

I've played with a tame red legged tarantula (well as tame as they get). It was quite nice and furry to pet.

Tame and cute? Most likely it just getting ready to pounce....I mean, how could one tell it's tame?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,083 ✭✭✭✭Stark

ugggh. At least tarantula's aren't supposed to be poisonous or at least have weak venom. The spider with the strongest venom is actually the daddy-long legs, their fangs are just too short to pierce human skin.

Those pics look well fake thank god. Though I can never sleep for a few nights after seeing the film "arachnophobia". Keep having to take the blankets off my bed and check carefully for spiders.

That spider is a fake! I have never in my life seen a spider that drags its body along the ground like that.. However pretty much all toy spiders do!!

On a side note a Tarantula bite is nothing more than a bad wasp sting. It could maybe kill a baby but thats about it.

I dont know about you lot, but finding this spider anywhere would scare the sh*t outta me, its the Theraphosa blondi (Goliath Bird Eating Spider)......... The scarey bit is his size! 10cm bodylength, 28cm legspan! Yes, that gives this guy an impressive leg span of nearly a foot :o

Heres another good pic of the brute

Red legged ones aren't poisonious. They are actually used in films (see Indiana Jones and the lost Crusade).

You can reconise a tame one because it doesn't bite you, and it's bite is a lot worse then a bad wasp sting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

    I hate spiders.

The bird eating guy however, he doesn't give me the freaks. He's more like a small furry pet. It's the two inch long hairy feckers who move at the speed of light that bother me.

Lets put it this way - there's no way the foot-long guy could fall on me and disappear inside my shirt...

    /shudder

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

I don't really mind spiders too much.

I remember being bitten by a jumping spider when I lived in Africa those feckers are quite intimidating they don't really crawl at all they bounce along at a very impressive speed. This guy just jumped across the sitting room and bit me on the foot, I was too fascinated by his movement to get out of the way.

I passed out fairly quickly afterwards though I don't know if that was from shock or venom. I felt grand when I woke up.

I remember also that they had to close our school for awhile because there was a huge nest of Black Widows.

In the trees above the swings.

How some kid didn't get killed I'll never know.
