Lottery Win

My Girlfriend won 1106 euros on the lotto last night with five numbers , all I could think about was the one remaining number that would have given her the 3.2 million.

Why is their such a gap between getting five numbers and winning a grand and getting six and winning the lot.

should it not be staggered a little bit ??

The aim of the National Lottery is to make money for charitable causes. They do this by giving away less than they take in.

The first prize is very big because that's what encourages people to enter.

Not exactly. Everybody knows the odds are incredibly long but the possibility still exists that you can win big (unlike, for e.g., income tax:))

Although as one of my lecturers said once:
British experts have calculated, you see, that you are as likely to win the British lottery by not buying a ticket as by buying a ticket.
    :D

    That sucks!
She should have done them in the bookies.. and got €50,000 for 5/6 numbers
    :(

Your comparing two totally different products there.
5 numbers in lottery have different odds of occuring than getting 5 in bookies.
The 54321 game versus the bookies odds is a better indicator.
The bookies come just ahead...but no money goes to charity in the bookies case.
I think you win 40000 with 5 in Lottery compared to 50000 in bookies.

Same could be said of any entertaintment, drink or cigs etc. None of that goes to any charities though does it. Are you against any form of entertainment?

    Well obviously..
If you have 5 numbers in the bookies and the 5 come out in the first 6, you get €50,000 for a €1 bet.. no matter what, the prize isn't shared like wht the national lottery..

but if you have 6 numbers on a national lottery slip, which you HAVE to have.. you have a better chance of 5 of them coming out.. because there's more numbers, the prize money will be smaller.
In the lotto 5-4-3-2-1 the prize money is shared in the 6 number draw but not in the 7 number draw

British experts have calculated, you see, that you are as likely to win the British lottery by not buying a ticket as by buying a ticket.

    Thats a much cheaper alternative! :o .
I shall be sure *not* to buy my ticket each week now :).

around six moths ago my gf was pickin numbers for our local lotto, she picked the first three number and i asked her to but 25 as her last number(being the day of my birthday) but she choose 21 cause it was her age.
she won 30 euro but 25 ended up being the fourth number in the draw instead of 21. she would have won 10 grand.

    I was raging.

I do the lotto now and then. Most i ever got was about €65 and then only recently. The GF did it the first time recently, got 5 numbers but only 175 yoyos. Very annoying, but nice at the same time.

I do the lotto most weeks, just a 3 euro quick pick, gets me 2 lines but it has that lotto plus thingie..

i think its more outta habit that I do it than anything, half the time i lose the ticket or never check em..

Sometimes I win a few quid here and there and ya kinda feel all chuffed with yerself, even if its just 10 euro or something.. :D

But someday, im gonna hit it big, my numbers are gonna roll in, im gonna tear around the place screaming my head off, laughing hysterically, tell all the begrudgers to f**k off and tell all those twats i know what i really think of em... and then im gonna realise i cant find the bloody ticket.. and fall down and cry.. :p:p:p

If you are going to do the Lotto here's a good tip from years of observation.
This will increase the amount you win but will not increase your chance to win..it wont decrease your chance either.
Pick numbers above 31 ..its quite simple.
Most people who do the Lotto..(the people who u share the prize fund with) pick Birthday numbers..and various dates.
So be different and pick all 6 numbers above 31..and throw in a few sequences..like 31...32...33....
Human nature though makes you pick random looking sets of numbers...but bear with the over 31 rule and you will win more (if you do win).
Also try not to do same numbers every week..because the week you forget to do it will be the week you would have won.
In large syndicates there is usually a pool of money at the end of year from Lotto winnings..usually a lot less than money put in..this amount will be increased if they go with the over 31 numbers. The % probability I'm not sure though as I did statistics a long time ago.
Another note..From been a Nat Lottery agent....people seem to be drawn to a large jackpot...if a jackpot is large..people wil say over and over...'Its worth winning tonight!'...and more people do play...I believe its worth winning every night but again..human nature is attracted to the larger jackpot.
So if you pay out more to match 5's ..just say 50000 Euros...which is the amount relative to having 6 numbers would appear to be fair..you would be left with a smaller jackpot..and less people would play... prize fund would also be smaller
There was 113 match 5 winners Sat night and each got 1106 Euros...i personally believe it should be higher..how much I dont know.
one last tip..which I heard from a Lotto 'expert' on the radio.
In large sydicates..dont play the Lotto every draw..pool money.. only enter the big draws... use the high numbers....and watch out for special event draws,Which offer offer better value because the unclaimed prizes are added..usually on Valentines....Xmas..mothers day etc...
People also say in the shop..'if you not in you cant win'
Well I think you have as much chance of finding the ticket as winning.:)..so you can win if you not in...

I do birthday numbers sometimes though....:)..cant resist.

uuuh..... Wanna explain that for those of us scratching our heads early on a monday morning?

If you dont buy a ticket, you CANT win. If you do, you have very long odds, but the chance is there.

    What am i missing?

I suppose mathematically, the prize could relate in someway to the odds on winning - i.e. a number of people are likely to win the 5 numbers ot something. I dunno, I;m not a maths person - maybe someone out there could do the necessary ratios pretty quickly.

Um...it's a *positive* thing to win 1,106 euro...

yes it is a totally positive thing to win that. but I have a serious cash flow problem at the moment and I wanted the full 3.2 million and all the trimmings. (greedy)

Odds of winning Lotto is 1 in around 2 million...so chances damn slim..
Odds of finding the winning ticket on the ground about 1 in a billion..:)..
either way you appear to have no chance...think thats what it means Dustaz...
Odds of winning British jackpot..with 49 numbers is 1 in 16 million..roughly..comapred to our 42 number jackpot.
    These figures pretty rough btw.

Was in a syndicate in a previous job.. 12 of us in it and we all picked 6 numbers, did the same numbers every week and one week 5 of my numbers came up.. we won about 1200 euro but because of how many of us there were I only ended up getting 95 euro.. i was happy but pissed off at the same time..

ahh well such is life :D

You're not missing anything. If you have a quick look back at my post I was quoting one of my lecturers (who made a silly comment...)
