The meaning of GAY ?

I have some ponderings relating to the word GAY
From what I can tell I understand 3 meanings of GAY

    1. Gay as in Happy e.g We’ll have a gay ‘ol time
    2. Gay as in homosexual e.g. Yellum is gay
    3. Gay as in weak or crap e.g that game was a bit gay

Now I would guess that they all come from the one place, gay meaning happy. And as people were afraid to say the word homosexual in bygone days they called the homosexuals “gay” can any one explain why this came about. Im sure not all homosexuals are happy and im fairly sure they were not happy back when it was considered bad to be homosexual.

Why are gays called gay ???

Second why do people call something that is not good Gay ? is this because of prejudices (spelling) developed against gay people, I would guess it is but if it not let me know.

Can't answer your first question I'm afraid, but in terms of the second one - yeah, this was originally a prejudicial term. I don't think it is any more though - it's become a more general purpose part of the language, interchangeable with words like "lame" or "weak" (if you're a Yank).

For etymology related topics, why not post this on the English forum. Seems like a more apt place.

i hate the refrence to crap, one time way back in the midst of october i was walking into a lecture with a friend (straight) and the hall was full so i just went straight (no pun intended) to the first two free seats i saw.

we sat down and then my friend turned to me and said. "do know what you are a fu*king langer, this is a gay angle to be sitting at."

i almost threw a fit. it pissed me off like you have no idea. and for the rest of the year he proceeded to call everything he didnt like or disagreed with "GGAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" in a northside cork city accent, (it helps in understanding as to why i was so pissed off with him if you know the norrie accent)
