    Exchange has some good features
    . Central email storage
    . Central Address list
. The ability to move users between servers (but only if setup to do so initially)
    . shared public folders

But it's a pig to manage and bloody expensive for what it is used for.

Outlook - in terms of viruses - it's an accident waiting to happen and again it is not cheap for what it does.

    ====================================

    What are the alternatives ?
    Must have webmail
Must be able to backup users emails
    Must have shared address lists

so far am looking at (clients & servers)
    MDaemon
    Pegasys
    Eudora
    Netscape

    are there any others ??

I used to install networks in schools and we always plumped for Mdaemon + Webpop (back when they were separate apps).

Now Mdaemon comes with Worldclient integrated. It's a quality application. Does everything it's supposed to and is immensely configurable.

You do away with all the calendaring and directory features of Exchange, of course. If they are important look at the Netscape alternatives or maybe something like iPlanet as a bolt-on.

MDaemon ships with LDaemon these days which can be used to create a central address book, I haven't had any look in actually connecting to it with Outlook however, and the documentation on doing so is a bit sparse... Mdaemon itself though isn't at all bad, it seems to be pretty stable and as ozpass said its very configurable.

If you want to replace Exchange and have the groupware functionality (server side storage, shared calenders / inbox etc) check out www.samsungcontact.com.

Their contact server (rebadged HP openmail):
    - runs under RH linux,
    - has groupware services, (public folders, GAL, sharing etc)
    - Has its own client or is compat. with Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 (via a MAPI driver), can also run in smtp/pop/imap mode
    - Has a web interface,
    - Real easy to install
    - Very stable (I installed to x 250 user sites 6 months ago, no server downtime since)
    - Really easy to administer (from a web interface)
    - Very cheap compared to Exchange; RH Linux free, e60 per user upto 100 users / mailboxes after that you can negotiate a lower price
    - quick support turn-around
    - and comes with has 5 free(ish) user licences that you can use in full prod. mode.

If you just want smtp + imap/pop you can always install RH linux tweak it abit and its ready to go.
