I just read on mmaJunkie that Matt Grice was involved in a fairly serious crash last night. Apparently he's in intensive care and needs to have brain surgey too.

UFC featherweight Matt Grice has undergone surgery and remains in serious condition following an overnight car crash in his home state of Oklahoma.

According to news9.com, the 32-year-old was hit from behind at a red light. Grice, a police officer who was off-duty at the time of the accident, was taken to Oklahoma University Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Grice reportedly was scheduled to undergo brain surgery early this morning.

His friend, Daniel Rubenstein, subsequently posted an update.

He tweeted: "Grice Update: In an ICU room. Vitals stable but still in very serious condition. Docs will MRI/Catscan in AM & determine best course of plan."

A hospital representative confirmed with MMAjunkie.com this morning that Grice is in intensive care unit but said she couldn't divulge additional info.

Grice (15-5 MMA, 2-5 UFC) is scheduled to fight Jeremy Larsen (8-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) next month at UFC 166 but almost assuredly will be replaced on the card.

Grice, a four-time state high school wrestling champion who received a scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, most recently appeared at UFC 157 in February, where he suffered a hard-fought decision loss to Dennis Bermudez. Both competitors won "Fight of the Night" bonuses for the effort.

Grice is 1-2 (2011-present) in his current UFC stint following a 1-3 run in his first (2007-2009).

Pretty shocking news. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery and gets back in the octagon soon.

Little bit of an update.....

As reported Monday, Grice, who's both a fighter and police officer, was hit from behind on Sunday during a multi-car accident. Grice, who was off duty at the time, suffered a head injury and underwent surgery, though details were not released.

The Oklahoma City Police Department issued a statement on Monday:

On Sunday, Sept 8th, at approximately 4pm off-duty Officer Matthew Grice (age 32) was involved in a serious multi-car accident in Shawnee, OK (accident investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol). The accident left him in critical condition.

Officer Grice was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital, where his status is currently listed as confidential. The Grice family has asked for privacy as they deal with this sudden and unfortunate situation.

Grice's friend, Daniel Rubenstein, has been providing periodic updates.

As he tweeted Monday night: "Matt is still sedated. Pupils reacting to light. Another catscan planned for tonight sometime. Matt's wife went home to be with their girls."

The UFC also released a statement: "The UFC sends its thoughts and prayers to featherweight Matt Grice, who was involved in a serious auto accident over the weekend in his native Oklahoma that required surgery. Grice is currently in the intensive care unit and more details on his condition will be posted as they are received."

Sounds like he's still not out of the woods yet.

TherapyBoy Kiss me with apocalypse..

The pupils reacting to light is a good sign. I read somewhere that they have him either in an induced coma or under heavy sedation, they will sometimes do this with head injuries until the initial swelling goes down & they can see what's wrong, so lots of scans & some waiting. Brain surgery is never fun.
I hope he pulls through ok.

I just read that he's no longer under sedation and has started breathing on his own and is responding to verbal cues.
Great news. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.
