Hi, I'm thinking about getting "Éire" tattooed in Ogham but obviously want to be certain I have the correct ogham translation.. For the É would I be correct in using 4 straight lines intersecting the spine? .. Would this be correct: |||| ||||| //// |||| .. Thanks

I am not an expert, but I don't think ogham really worked like that, with marks corresponding to letters in the modern alphabet. Did it?

AFAIK there are only 20 letters in Ogham and I've never seen any diacritics used... And of course it reads from the bottom up

Most translations I've seen done from modern alphabets end up being simplified or shortened versions of the originals. The 4 letters of Éire can be directly translated. But then again the word Éire(modern Irish) wasn't used at the time the Ogham language/script was, as Ogham dates as far back (further even) as primitive Irish! Maybe someone more learned than me can tell us what the Ogham for Ireland is

@Stripey Cat I translate letter for letter, and thats what I'm used to doing/seeing. No idea if its 100% correct or not!
