Diabetes Federation of Ireland holding its National Spring Meeting in Athlone

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland will be holding its National Spring Meeting in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Sunday April 10th at 2pm. The meeting will focus on the importance of self care with and will centre on inner motivation with a goal to getting things done.

An array of speakers will address attendees and actively provide up to date information on new developments and general lifestyle advice. Speakers on the day include Dr. Tommy Kyaw Tun, Clinical Senior Lecturer, Connolly Memorial Hospital who will discuss ‘The ABC’s of Diabetes’, which will be an educational outline on the do’s and don’ts for people with diabetes.

Dr. Ronan Canavan, Consultant Endocrinologist, Loughlinstown Hospital will highlight the importance of, and the need for, regular diabetic retinopathy (an eye condition affecting 1 in 3 people with diabetes in Ireland) and foot care screening while Professor Richard Firth, Consultant Endocrinologist and HSE Diabetes Clinical Lead, will be speaking on the national development of new screening services in these areas and when people can expect to avail of them.

Kieran O’Leary, CEO, Diabetes Federation of Ireland, said “the development and launch of these new services is of extreme importance to thousands of people with diabetes throughout the country. On their behalf, I very much welcome the HSE’s commitment to developing these diabetes services and look forward to the day the first patients receive their written invitation to attend for eye and foot screening appointments”.

To conclude the meeting, Ms Anne Mullan, Dietitian, Diabetes Federation of Ireland will draw attention to the sneaky little habits that sabotage our best efforts to lose weight despite eating well on a daily basis.
“I would urge people with diabetes to come along to this meeting and hear from the experts” said Kieran.

The next Type 1 meeting takes place on Tuesday, 12th April in the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis from 8pm til 9:30pm.

The subject of dealing with alcohol came up last month so I've found a couple of fact sheets on the subject and will bring them. I also thought that we would talk about blood glucose testing; how often we do it and why. This might be interesting to discuss because we all seem to do it differently.

Regards,
Grainne.
