I am due to get my gallbladder removed in 3weeks and am just wondering has anybody got this done in the past that could help me out with a diet plan for after the operation??
Any advice would be great thanks!!
Did you not receive an appointment with a dietician? Surely that should be part and parcel of the op? If not, I'd ask for one, this is a highly specific situation and you really need someone qualified who knows your whole history.
I will say one thing that you can run past your dietician when you talk to them, coconut oil is an MCT fat that does not require bile to digest, so is great for post-gallbladder removal.
Yea, this is not something you should get from the internet, its something you need to get from a certified medical specialist.
TBH I would almost think this thread should be closed [no offence intended to you op, its for your own good tbh]
But thats just my opinion.
This is probably a bit over the top.
Gilly, normally they will make an appointment with a dietician for you after the op.
There is nothing really special about the diet, it's normally just the usuall eat healthy/senisble and exercise malarky.
Have a look over Gem's thread in the sticky.
I had mine removed in April, I was given no special diet just carry on as normal
Foods that contain high fats should be avoided for faster recovery from gall bladder surgery. High fat foods place more burdens on the digestive system. To digest these high fat foods the digestive system requires more bile content. Since the gall bladder is operated it cannot supply the required bile content.
After the surgery the system releases constant level of bile whereas for digesting high fat foods the digestive system requires more bile than the normal level.
Avoiding such foods would expedite your recovery from gall bladder surgery. During the initial days only liquid foods are recommended, particularly on the day of the operation.
Had my gall bladder removed about 8yrs ago and eat what I like now. They will advise you after the operation. I have my stones in a little jar!!! My mother had 96 stones and when she got it done it was a very serious operation with a long recovery. Its great now how keyhole surgery makes the whole procedure much easier. Good luck!
I am also having my gallbladder removed in 3 weeks. I asked about diet post op and was told they will advise me after the op. My bother had his removed and he is back to a normal diet and just gets heartburn if some food doesnt agree with him so he then knows to steer clear.
Anyone who has had the operation - does it take long? What about recovery time?
im going to see a consultant on the 16th to schedule a date for my gallbladder removal(oh how i hate that word GALLBLADDER) Im afraid to eat because im in so much pain, living on broth soup and pasta. Cant wait to get the stupid thing out and get back to normal!
Anyone else hear that you put on weight after the op and have chronic diarrhea for the rest of your life if you eat something fatty? im worried about this
The one thing I would advise is not to dig too deep into stories online about post op.
I scared myself half to death.
There was one guy convinced he had a toothache for two years over the gal bladder removal
For the vast majority of people recovery is straight forward.
try and eat as healthy as you can after and try keep a half decent diet afterwards with some exercise and you should be fine.
One thing I did notice and it could be in my head, hangovers got a lot worse, so maybe ease up on the drinking for awhile
Cant speak for everyone but I certainly didn't put on weight or suffer from diarrhea after it. Pretty much eat what I like now! Keep to ur no fat diet until the op as it keeps down the inflamation and your scars will be smaller with the keyhole surgery. Mine was still slightly inflamed so my main scar is slightly bigger. Good luck u will be absolutely fine!
just to jump in here and change topic, but did anyone get the surgery done privately
and if so how much did it cost?
