Can anyone recommend, through personal experience or that of a friend, a knee specialist in Cork for a consultation? An MRI scan has suggested a tear in both the posterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus cartilage of my knee.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you know of a more suitable forum for this posting please suggest.
I don't know if a Rheumatologist can help but I'm seeing a fantastic one for my Fibromyalgia - Dr. Brian Mulcahy, Shanakiel, I think it would be worth giving his clinic a call (if you have VHI - you can claim a portion of this visit back). Good luck. J
Thanks for that suggestion Judes. David Mulchay (same person?) was suggested to me by my physio but he's not a knee specialist.
creedon out of the bons
mahalingham out of shandon st clinic
tadgh o sullivan . whitfield clinic waterford.
Guy in Waterford is supposed to be very good - Hartmann in Limerick is another one.
I've heard Tadgh's name come up a bit but it looks like I'm going with James Harty. He's based in Cork so it'll be much more convenient. If it'd be of any interest to any of you I can let you know how I've got on. My consultation should be in April.
Best of luck with it, hope it all goes well
Cheers RG15. I'm sure all will go well. I'm really looking forward to discovering other interests and activities during the recovery period.
Had knee surgery by James Harty...he's brilliant...was recommended by rheumatologist!
Thanks for that tictac2580. Very encouraging to hear. Was your surgery a reconstruction of your cruciate also? If so, what was your recovery like? Do you participate in sports? How long before you were able to get back?
No sorry I can't help, I got two total knee replacements (I'm only 22 mind!) at end of january so wouldn't be sure about recovery from the surgery you would be undergoing.
Kieran Barry is also excellent. He did a job on my knee and numerous people I know have been operated on by him also. He's in the Bons and his private office is on Sarsfield Road.
Sorry to hear that tictac. My problem certainly pales in comparison to yours. Good luck with your recovery. I hope you'll come back stronger than ever.
Thanks Atlantic1. My GP had actually suggested Kieran Barry but I'd already made contact with James Harty's clinic.
How did you get on? I could be going for surgery with him in the near future!
Very well actually.
His interpretation of the MRI scan of my knee differed somewhat from that of the radiographer who'd written up the initial report on it. He agreed that there was thickening around the cruciate ligament which suggested a tear. However, he reckoned that this was an old injury which had since healed and, as I'd been playing football on it without any real problems for the last number of years, it should be fine. He noted signs of a tear in the meniscus in my knee which had also been mentioned in the radiographer's report but explained that if he was to remove it it could cause problems down the line. He suggested that I get back to doing whatever I wanted but that there might be some discomfort. I came out of there feeling like I'd just won the lotto. I've gone back to kicking balls and other activities without any bother and without any real discomfort so far.
He wasn't going to operate on me just for the sake of it which was good to know and did seem like a fairly amiable fella.
Hopefully you'll get a similar diagnosis. If not though, good luck with the surgery and subsequent recovery. Given the impression which I got from him, you should be in good hands.
