Quick question on intuition/gut feeling

I'm hoping that this is the correct forum for this!

A close family member has a trip to Italy for a wedding in a few weeks but is worried about going as she has a really bad 'gut-feeling' about the trip. Specifically that something may happen to her.

The background to her worry is that about 18 months ago while leaving a visit to relatives in Tipperary she had a similar bad feeling except that it was more that she wont see some of these relatives again. One grand uncle died suddenly at 58yrs 2-3 weeks later and subsequently an aunt was diagnosed with cancer(though with reasonable prognosis). There was about 10 of us at the gathering.

For me the jury is out on these types of moments but tend to follow my gut more often than not.

Id be interested in peoples opinions on whether any notice should be taken or not, or how others would react....dismiss or give credence?

There are no obvious other reasons for the worry like cost or fear of flying etc. Her husband will still travel over so as said it seems to be specific.

Much appreciated in advance!

If she still has a persistent bad feeling about going to Italy up until, say, a few days before her departure, maybe she should just stay at home then? That's what I would do. Another thing is that, whatever about what she feels might happen to her in Italy, it'd be hard for her to just enjoy herself at the wedding in that worried state of mind.

If she's of a slightly paranormal mindset, she could always 'ask' whatever-she-believes-in (guardian angel, God, spirit of beloved deceased relative..) to give her a 'sign' in her dreams that that the trip is a bad idea before she goes to sleep each night. Or she could request 'signs' in her waking life.

Worth a shot anyway if her bad feeling is really bothering her.

It's possible that she is paying more attention to this gut feeling as something bad happen previously which at the time she associated to a gut feeling. Everyone has gut feelings all the time but never pay much attention to them, maybe your friend is linking the gut feeling and the family members death and illness by pure coincidence.

- How many times has she/you/anyone had a 'gut feeling', and it didn't pan out? You forget about those ones, but remember the ones that do. If she's of a nervous disposition, then she probably has these feelings all the time!

- Expecting "something bad" is a bit vague is it not? What are the criteria one would use to determine if their gut feeling came true? If someone dies it's pretty clear, but what if they just ended up in hospital? What if they picked up an infection and antibiotics cleared it up? If they found out they were losing their job? etc. You can probably count it as a hit no matter what happens, as long as it's vaguely "bad"!

- Similar to the above, what's the timeframe that the event would have to fall within after she had the feeling, in order for her to attribute it to her intuition? 2 - 3 weeks for the person dying suddenly, presumably a bit longer for the person to be diagnosed with cancer. Could she have a bad feeling about this wedding, and if then several months later something bad happens to someone, it'll reinforce her belief in this intuition?

I think she should stop looking for patterns that aren't there.
