couldnt find a similar thread on this.

was picking someone up from Dublin airport T1 on Tuesday night at around midnight. I was in the set down area and there were about 3 to 4 other cars there at any one time.

I was there for a total of 6 minutes, was approached by airport police 3 times and had to do a circle of the grounds twice.

whilst I understand the need to implement this when its busy, at the time I was there there was never more than 5 cars stopped waiting for someone.

I'm writing about this now but over the years its happened to me so many times.

Has anyone else experienced this? Seems pretty pointless to me when the airport was so quiet.

They want your money, they want people who are picking up to be using the short term car park.

The same happens out near that chapel where people tend to wait too, in my experience you tend to get moved on less there, but they still move you on all the same.

It's usually easier to get away with when it's semi busy. Didn't have any problems there a couple of weeks ago. And ended up their for 15 mins due to confusion on part of person I was picking up.

Problem when it's so quite is they have spare time on their hands to chase these small things.

It's the law, end of story.

i wouldnt normally mind doing a circle of the airport, been doing it for years when picking people up, but the second time I was told to circle I was on the phone to the person I was picking up and he was on the escalator up to departures. i explained this to the policeperson but he didnt care and I had to move on.

ive always realised it was security, but surely I'm a risk whether I'm there 30 seconds or 5 minutes?

as i say it never really used to bother me but the older I get the grumpier I am and the less I like to drive around aimlessly at €1.65 per litre!

I guess the clue is in the name of the area... It's a set-down zone. As someone mentioned earlier, they don't want to make it easy for people to arrive up who are collecting people and wait in this area for 5/10 minutes.

They obviously want you to use the exorbitantly priced short term parking. A bit of common sense at very quiet times wouldn't go amiss though...

In a word its the law.

It's illegal for you to pick up there as set out currently by the Airport Byelaws 1994 soon to be replaced by Airport Byelaws 2011 (Currently before the Minister).Members of the Airport Police Service our their to enforce these provision. In recent court cases, members of the public have said that the reason they parked there & waited to pick up is because other cars where doing the same so they taught they could.

Judges to date have thrown out these excuses, stating that they could not understand why people did not just have parked in car parks as the rules state they can't park in the set down area.

So by allowing any amount of vehicles to park there and so contravene the bye laws just encourages other cars do the same. This is why the Airport Police are proactive in moving vehicles on (Quiet or not) as no one is allowed stop there and prevents the above type of incident from occurring they also have a number of avenues available to them for enforcement of persons/vehicles breaching the set down area rules such as:

Power to issue Fixed Penalty Notices with failure to pay leading to a prosecution in the District Court and/or Impounding & Towing of Vehicles within the airport.

Short term parking is free for 15 or 20 mins
Or else park away from set down until the person is there and then collect them

I got grief off the cops there while setting an elderly relative down, so picking someone up is definitely gonna cause grief

<pedant mode> is there not some sort of distinction between parking & stopping, related to whether there is anyone in the vehicle ?

If you are stopped in the car and are sitting in it you're not parked. Otherwise we would call carparks carstops instead.

My Dad picks me up all the time from the departures area, the key here is to not to sit and wait there. My Dad parks up at the viewing layby near runway 24 and I phone him when I go through the arrivals. By the time, I have gone to the toilet and up the escalator to the departures, he is coming up the road, stops and I jump in.

If there is a particular overzealous policeman, I walk down the ramp, under Terminal 2 to the other side and he picks me up there.

Is there not an official pick up point out beside the coach park? IIRC there are two lanes out past the Spar in the short term car park for picking up.

You are correct there are two carriage ways at the back of the car park atrium but both carry Double Yellow lines and No Parking/Stopping signage. So if a person stops a vehicle there they are not only illegally parked but alway causing a danger or obstruction to other traffic.

It is used as an unofficial pick up/collection point by many as it is out of the sight of the Terminals but the area is regularly patrolled by Uniformed and Plain Clothes members of the Airport Police who enforce the Road Traffic provision of the Byelaws.

OK thanks. I do remember being picked up from there before and the person collecting me was directed to it as a pick up point with pull in bays, but that was when they where doing huge amounts of building work so properly got rid of it now, as they called me to tell me to move away from the last door on the set down ramp

What I used to do was wait at the viewing spot on the old airport road and get the person I was meeting to call me as they left the baggage hall and I'd meet them on the set down ramp. They'd have a few minutes wait but never had any hassles.

It is not an official pick up point if it is being used unofficially
