What do you know about Social Engineering?

Quote:
You're now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!
You: hello
Stranger: Hi
Stranger: Asl?
You: Your male and a teenager
Stranger: And you know that how...
You: demographics
Stranger: Demographics? Haha ok then and you are?
You: thats not how this works
Stranger: Ok explain it to me then
You: you tell me how right i am
Stranger: Completely
You: your in the US
Stranger: Yes
You: West Coast, or at least closer to the west coast than the east
Stranger: Yes
You: Your state is ON the coast?
Stranger: Y
Stranger: es
You: California
Stranger: Very good
You: bay area
Stranger: Nope a city about 20 min. Away from la
You: thats as close as demographics will get you.
You: youve got brown hair
Stranger: Ok so tell me about yourself and yeah
You: you've got no sisters
Stranger: True
You: thinking what else i can deduce from this....
You: you've never done drugs apart from marijuana at most
Stranger: Damn your good
You: thinking///
Stranger: can I at least know what gender?
You: your white (id prefer not to bring racial stereotyping into it)
You: maybe hispanic though
You: probably not
Stranger: Well looks wise but I'm 50% mexican
You: that's demographics. I'm sure someone with any shred of talent could do better than me.
You: Do you want to know how i deduced that information?
Stranger: Well you seem really talented
Stranger: Sure
You: you said ASL and its 9:50 pacific time
Stranger: *9:51
You: the rest came with confirmation of my other assumptions
You: You told me all that
Stranger: Ah I see
Stranger: Ok thats enough about me wby?
You: whats "wby"?
Stranger: What about you?
You: What i did to you is a blatant form of social engineering. look it up and look after yourself online kid.
You have disconnected.
Your fairly vulnerable online with the information you divulge and the topic of Social Engineering is something I will be pursuing with interest in future (undergrad Psych). I just ripped this complete stranger apart in 5 minutes with information that is readily available to anyone. How safe do you think you are against someone who might actually want to harm you?

Ok its 06:09am in the morning

california 22:00 pm at the time well say 21:45..pm

So the chances of getting talking to a random male teenager in claifornia are high, you didn't social engineer anything, what you did was guess with the use of a time zone... :roll eyes:

If your going to start some phsy babble first of come, credible information would help. Secondly you used steps which are known as cold reading, and a slightly passive aggressive tone on a younger person, and a curious mind would sit there and listen.

If you turned round and said that to an adult and pulled thats stunt Id tell you togo away. You just got some kid inexperienced enough to listen to you.

Its all true I hear that pedophiles can learn your address through your IP address then get you online and once they see your online they can give you a powerful electric shock through your computer keyboard which will knock you out. They can then unlock your door using their hacking skills on your computer enter your house and take you away to molest you. They can even bring you back before you wake up and you will be none the wiser. It happens to adults too. I know this is true because it happened to a friend of mines friend and is the only possible explanation as to how images of him got up on that gay porn site.

True story!

Spoiler: Maybe not.

I think you are overestimating your 'skills' a little. How many times did you get it wrong before this attempt?

Depends on the mood, I'll agree or disagree with what these chat-roulette randomers.

If someone wanted to harm you, there's easier ways than online chat, such as "random" surveys.

Leverage a credit card number out of someone in a chat and then I'll be impressed.

I'm in college and I think I'm smart because I spoke to a kid online and guessed a few basic facts about him based on answers he gave me to questions, multiple choice ones at that.
that's pretty much it.
