Looking to play somewhere nice in the next 4/5 weeks and want to try out a linksy somewhere within 1.5 hours from carlow preferably. Thinking of Portmarnock? Anybody played any recently and any deals going up til end if april for midweek? Cheers!

Portmarnock have a open on Monday ok value at 40 quid compared to most links courses being 60 plus. There aren't many bad links courses in the country, RCD are doing a special until the end of the month if it's not too far.

The Island ( But you may still be putting ball on side of fairway ?) One of the best in Dublin (IMO).

The hotel Links in Portmarnock.

Corballis as a warm up night before ( great at 20 euro)

European Club - check out if they are doing the matchplay (fourball and singles). Hard to get better once you get a good rate.
Rosslare is a nice links too and accessible.

If you want to see the real links golf in Ireland, go to the west coast Tonesy; Working from North to South you got; Rosses Point, Enniscrone, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Ballybunion, Tralee, Waterville. Plenty other great courses i've left out there but those are my pick of the bunch.

A group of us have this booked for the weekend after Easter. Strandhill on Thursday evening, Rosses friday morn followed by a hasty spin up to Murvagh in Donegal (€25 for Open comp on Fridays) and the Enniscrone Saturday. Can't wait to tick these off my must play list. Rosses Point should be in great nick as the West of Ireland is on the weekend before.

To the OP - a links within 1.5 hours of Carlow couldn't recommend the European Club more highly, fantastic course, forget the green fee price published on the website and just ring the proshop saying you'll be up from Carlow for the day how much will you do a green fee for, they'll probably do it for €60.

It would be a shame to stay in that neck of the woods and not play Carne (Belmullet) Never was the phrase "Beautiful monster" more apt when describing a golf course

Its purely that I have never played any of the above why they were omitted but i've played most from sligo downwards and hence thats where i started. Heard good things about most of the above u have listed just felt i couldn't recommend as I haven't played them.

Baltray is worthy of a mention too but given your location, I think the European could be your best bet if you can get it at a decent rate.
